Amazon Fire TV | Previous Generation – Top streaming box

Upgraded from the firestick to this and with an ethernet cable plugged in its great, much faster and the picture is way better than over wifi i cant complain its worth the money i was going to buy an a3 box but the build quality on this is better and kodi works well on it.

On the whole a good little box. This is the second one we’ve had so far. We got the first at a discount when amazon pulled the plug on the apps built in to many tvs and home cinemas etc. This worked reasonably well but had an annoying habit of coming out of sleep repeatedly, crashing, rebooting and then remaining on. Gave up trying to resolve this and lived with it until the box finally died (presumably because of continued overheating) when it was out of warranty. Tried and failed to get amazon to fix/replace it and settled for having a few quid off the ‘new’ version – which i now note is discontinued and replaced by an even newer one. This one looks and operates in much the same way as the previous one. It now has 4k support of course but as we don’t have a 4k tv it’s fundamentally the same. The user interface slightly faster but that could be down to the latest software. The remote is much the same albeit slightly bigger than the previous one.

Good quality 1080p high definition, having previously tried two roku boxes, both faulty, and an android set top box, which needed a computer engineer to operate, the amazon fire tv box is by far the best quality, the most reliable, and the easiest to operate, excellent. We are both impressed and happy with the fire stick with voice control which we. We are both impressed and happy with the fire stick with voice control which we bought for the bedroom tv, we bought the ultra 4k fire stick as well to pair up with the 4k tv, the choice of viewing content is brilliant, but as always when we want to purchase anything we read reviews on said items, some users of the fire stick have experienced freezing, we too have had it freeze as well, this is very annoying, our internet signal is excellent so don’t throw that one at us ( amazon ) had we not had the freezing i would have gladly given 5***** , but don’t let this put you off buying one, it is good, picture and sound quality is very good.

Very impressive piece of kit. Easy to install and a easy to operate. The remote is quite clever, in that it uses a wireless link, rather than the usual optical infrared. Further, it’s a duplex device, which means its firmware can be updated by amazon, via your wi-fi. Cleverthe only down side, you’ll watch far too many filmshighly recommended.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • On the whole a good little box
  • But like most owned brands
  • Didn’t do what I wanted but ended up keeping it!

Great device, poor apps, cheap, flimsy remote. . Easy setup, on both wifi and ethernet but disappointed with the number of apps. . Only netflix and bbc i player worth having. Itv on but quite frankly itv has nothing worth watching anyway, i would have thought that at the least c4 and c5 on demand might have been on there?. And maybe blinkbox too?it would get 5 stars if these were on, (might be available sometime in the future. . Please amazon?)fantastic design, but agree with an earlier comment regarding lack of optical port. . Hdmi pass through though is fine, but for some the optical connection would have been better?, also the remote is a bit flimsy and ‘clicky’. . Cheapens the overall product which is excellent by design. Agree with an earlier poster.

Just as an android box its worth it for the remote. . Having kodi available is perfect. Only bad point would be no optical output which is somewhat annoying but using a splitter which is working fine. I’m using an ethernet cable so can’t comment on wi-fi. You will need a pretty good router to attempt this as your streaming 4k tv which is going to need more bandwidth. Anyone saying ‘my smart tv does it’ your probably only streaming at 1080p and not 4k so can’t compare. There is a tv player for live free view box plus many catchup apps like iplayer etc. If you want sky tv and everything else then the answer is yes you can but will need to dig for that yourself.

I have used it constantly for a few. After two broken fire sticks i finally took the plunge, no more constant buffering. No more false reports that my internet connection is slow when it isn’t, no more freezing after a few hours. I have used it constantly for a few months now without a single problem. I would recommend it above the firs stick everytime.

Didn’t do what i wanted but ended up keeping it. What i really wanted from this was a media box that i could use amazon prime, netflix and kodi as well as play files off the usb port with a connected hard drive. However after much reformatting, trying different hard drive enclosures and different file formats as well as drive formats the fire tv would not read any files off my 1tb ssd. It could see something was there, but couldn’t read any files. So i started the returns process and thought i’d use it for a couple days then return it afterwards. The hardware is sleek and looks great, i’m usually one for hiding away allvmy cabling and hardware being the tv or in hidden shelves but the fire tv sits proud under my tv. It’s obviously taken some design cues for the apple tv but that doesn’t make it any less good looking. The ui is great although the addition of the ‘recents’ being unable to move at the top of the list is rather annoying. It copes very well with streaming content and seamlessly switches between video qualities when my (admittedly awful 2mbps) internet started struggling. The main reason i kept it was it’s ease of use. Being able to just press one button to wake it up, press the voice buttton and search for what i wanted to watch and start watching very quickly is a godsend after a long day at work where you just want to kick back and watch a bit of tv. A few things to improve on-being able to switch the thing off without unplugging it. The best you can do is ‘sleep’ in which the top of the box still stays fairly warm so i don’t think it’s doing much sleeping rather than just displaying a black screen.

Easy to use for old (they are in their 60’s). Bought this for my dad as he wanted the one that you could connect an ethernet cable to it, as the wifi in his house is awful (bt home hub). I gave my parents a quick demo, and left them to it. Easy to use for old (they are in their 60’s) and young people alike. Great product and has everything they need. I’ll probably upgrade my fire stick at some point (when i get a 4k tv) to this one.

Very pleased with the amazon fire, i do not have a 4g tv but i have seen it on a friend’s who has and it is very impressive. It was easy to set up, just plug and play. Mine has had an update and all works good. I find itv player and bbc i player pictures have improved from watching just on the tv, i believe i read that the fire improves the quantity even if your tv is not 4k. The voice search is also very good.

Really easy to use, great quality streaming and loads of choice of videos. The only annoying thing is not all videos are included on prime, and it’s not obvious how long a certain series/film well be included. I was half way through watching a series when it came off of prime, and it’s £2. 99 for one series, cheaper to buy it on dvd. But the box itself is great, works really well with no buffering ever.

  1. The box offers lots of films, music and tv series ect. But like most owned brands, they do restrict you from downloading certain apps, unless of course you are tech minded, also with the amazon apps available, that they do offer, their are fees on certains ones to be paid. So it could end up expensive in the long run. I think amazon could have helped themselves if they had a free iptv service with at least the basic channels that are generally available in one app, rather then in several different apps. But if your into the buying of amazon products online as well, then with the prime service which offers free delivery on items, it is well worth it.
