PRO-JECT Project VC-S Record Cleaner : OK For The Price

The unit is ok for the price, but there are better built alternative available for not much more money. I’m going to hang on to it until i can afford something better. Incidentally, i don’t use the project supplied cleaning fluid (who knows what it contains?) – but make up my own cleaning fluid according the the renowned london jazz collector recipe.

I have never used a machine like this before so can’t comment on other makes like okki nokki etc. What i can say is this machine works a treat, i had some records that had been in a damp environment and where practically unplayable due to i presume mould and dirt the stylus would pick up all sorts of rubbish. Having just replaced my cartridge and a new £95 stylus (ouch) thought it was time to clean my collection of records and looking at the prices of other machines picked this one. So far i have cleaned 10 very dirty records and i must say i am impressed they are back to as new sound wise. The fluid that was supplied with mine does not contain any alcohol but appears to work great getting all the muck off. I did initially supplement the supplied brush with a small microfiber paint pad for a deeper clean in the groves just to be on the safe side but have since cleaned some really dirty records with just the supplied brush and they play perfectly as well. I noticed some users complaining about the size of the platter but did not find this a problem as long as you don’t push down on the record to hard. In fact it’s probably better as you can’t get any muck from the platter contaminating your records. All in all this gets a thumbs up from me great machine at a great price.

Agree with others that this does a great job of cleaning records. . I was skeptical but this also does enhance the sound. Clicks and pops caused by surface dirt are eliminated and background noise reduced, even on some lps in my collection that are 60 years old and have definitely seen a lot of action. Dynamic range also seems to be improved. There are niggles, the supplied brush started loosing hairs so is fairly useless. The vacuum is a bit noisy and the vacuum arm could do with being 2-3mm longer just to clear all the fluid from the run out groove. I’ve cleaned about 15 lps and the felt pads have stayed in place, so assume project have addressed this problem. One needs a bit of practice but this i find is mainly to do with not using too much fluid. And once you hit a rhythm, with some music in the background, it’s a strangely satisfying way to spend a few free hours. I don’t agree with other reviewers that the fact the vc-s does not have a full platter is a problem, you do not need to exert much pressure on the brush when cleaning.

Excellent product, does what it’s designed to do very well but with a few minor issues. I’ve owned the unit for about two weeks now and have come across an issue in that when i went to replace the adhesive pads (as they pretty grubby after two weeks of solid cleaning) the replacements wouldn’t stick to the vacuum arm. Threw that set away and tried another set and the same thing happened. Contacted customer support who passed me on to technical support who tried to fob me off with more replacement pads. I then threatened to get a refund and they begrudgingly offered me a new suction arm. Hasn’t arrived yet so can’t say if it’s made a difference. Only blight (apart from cheap dymo style labels on the unit) with this unit which has been excellent and very simple to use. I diluted the 100ml cleaning fluid concentrate 1:10 and it worked absolutely fine and does make a huge difference to overall sound quality, static removal etc. Highly recommend but the issue with the strips is a major pain but not present on all machines.

Oh yes then you really need one of these pronto. Ok i have had my new vcs for about 2 weeks now and have cleaned a couple of hundred albums with it in that time. Here are my thoughts based on my experience to date. I agonised for weeks before taking the plunge. My main fears being a) is it snake oil?. B) have they fixed the minor quality niggles reported by early customers around the adhesive rubber seal on the clamp and the strips on the vacuum arm. Categorically it isn’t snake oil.

Project VC-S Record Cleaner : Innovative vinyl cleaning at affordable price. . Does exactly what is required to do when cleaning vinyl compared to devices £100 plus more expensive. Well made and designed, especially vacuum system. Does not require to be any fancier.

Haven’t used the solution supplied but works great with my home made solution. I have not had any issues with the foam strips coming off the arm as some people have.

This is brilliant – if you like vinyl records you will love. This is brilliant – if you like vinyl records you will love this. I cannot believe the difference it makes having previously been very cautious about using any wet cleaning system. Even at the recently increased price it is a complete steal.

I spent many hours deliberating about whether or not to buy this, and i am so glad that i did. I can honestly say that it has 100% improved the sound of my vinyl records. I buy quite a lot of second hand 12′ vinyl singles, and was disappointed with some recent purchases that suffered from some really loud crackling, especially at the start of the tracks. Every single one that i have cleaned with this machine so far has been transformed, sounding and looking as good as brand new. I have used the solution that comes with it, diluted with de-ironised water, and it works a treat. Yes, it’s a bit bulky, and not exactly silent, but these are very small prices to pay. It’s so easy to set up and operate, each record takes just a couple of minutes to clean, and the results are fantastic. I know that there are more expensive record cleaners out there, but i can’t really see what extra they offer compared to this one. I wish i had purchased it sooner.

It’s expensive, but it really works. The difference in sound quality is quite unbelievable. Easy to set up and use (lots of youtube vids if you get stuck) and my record collection is now unrecognisable from before, even on 40y old lps.I’m genuinely quite stunned. Looks like i won’t need that arm upgrade i was planning 👍.

This is a good device for the price have cleaned well over 200 records, lid keeps it dust free. Very please with the results it gives.

Good machine but be aware of its negative elements. I’m now on my third replacement vc-s cleaner. The concept is great but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. Problems are:the cleaning pads do not adhere properly to the vacum arm and come away after about two or three cleans, some machines have a plastic vacum support stub which does not fit properly into the metal vacum arm, both previous machines suffered from a horizontal misalignment between the vacum arm and the platter for which there is no adjustment – this means that the arm does not sit square onto the record leaving a cleaning residue towards the outer edge of the record. Also , why on earth they could have a simple drain tap or plug for the release of fluid instead of having to physically lift & tilt the machine is beyond belief. It’s a shame really because when working as it should the results are worth every penny.
