(Discontinued by Manufacturer) : Fantastic Product

We decided to upgrade our ten-year old tv to something a bit more modern recently and so (as is usual when choosing an expensive gadget) i spent many evenings reading reviews of all manner of tvs. A couple of weeks of this and my head was done in – way too many options, acronyms and features when all we were looking for was a nice family tv. So after the initial rush of storing 55″+ tvs in my wishlist, my search became a little more focused. I used a tv size calculator (the which website has a very good one) – which lets you plug in the size of the tv and will then tell you how far away you need to sit from it to be able to get the best viewing (or vice versa). We could have gone to 55″, but went for the smaller size tv for a couple of reasons: cost and also because we have two young children and i’m not sure sitting a few feet from a relatively large tv will be good for their eyes or necks. So after a bit more procrastinating, i had whittled down a shortlist to this sony and the samsung 6300 samsung ue55es6300 3d full hd 1080p smart 3d led tv with wi-fi built-in and freeview hd and 2 x glasses included (new for 2012). Both highly-rated manufacturers. In the end, the decision was made after a visit to the local john lewis store. The sony had a glass screen and the samsung didn’t – not sure what type of screen the samsung had (seemed a little soft), but the thought of small kids poking their fingers into an expensive screen was frightening. The sony’s glass screen can take a fair bit of prodding and can be cleaned very easily.

Plenty of hdmi ports, hdmi-cec so xbmc works perfectly on my raspberry pi. Iplayer and 5od work fine, it’s a shame there’s no option for c4 or itv. Picture quality is so far ahead of my previous samsung. Startup time is a _little_ slow, but really not that bad. The stand tilting back the monitor is a little odd but you get used to it, it seems worse at wider viewing angles. Having it lean backwards is comforting with young children trying to smack it.

Bought this when my previous sony expired. Looked at the reviews both here and in magazines and decided this was the one to buy. Delivery was prompt and tv was soon up and running. Just about managable to assemble with ony one person, but straight forward. Picture quality excellent and no problems with the sound. Some reviewers had issues with the sound, but made sure i selected the sound bar as the sound output when setting up the tv and all seems to be fine.

This telly is still working after 6 years.

117cm / 46″, Full HD 3D TV with Dynamic Edge LED, X-Reality PRO, built-in Wi-Fi and Sony Internet TV

Recently purchased kdl55hx853 and must say it is amazingstraight out of the box it is very easy to setup whether using the soundbar stand or wall mounting. All fixtures and fittings slot together easily and are very intuitive. When first powering up you are guided through a very easy to understand basic setup guide which guides you through all the normal language selection, tuning and network setup. The hd picture is fantastic with all the factory default settings but it is possible to make them better with the amount of picture adjustment options.Analogue or digital pictures can be a little hit and miss but this is more down to the filming and age of the broadcast but even the worse pictures can be adjusted to an acceptable viewing level and some very close to hd quality. I’ve used the set with the soundbar stand, home cinema and just the integrated speakers. I am currently just using the integrated speakers and although with the default settings it’s not great, have found with a little bit of setting up the sound quality is pretty damn good. Note like the picture setup if the broadcast is old then don’t expect miracles with the sound. If using youtube, twitter, facebook or general web browsing i would recommend the iphone/pad remote control app to make typing a lot easier.

After sony’s lacklustre offerings of late they are back on top. I replaced my old lg as i wanted to put it in the bedroom and decided to treat myself to something a little bigger for the living room. Yes, you can get 3d smart tv’s for a lot less money, but you get what you pay for. Stunning motion, even under the fastest action and panning shots. Fantastic detail and colour.

My wife and i ummed and ard as to wether we should spend the money on this product as we are on a limited income as pensioners. We are so glad we did, it is fantastic, easy to fix yourself with basic tools for wall fitting. And useing our pvr-9300t humax, the set was up and running the same day as delivery. This 3d tv is amazing, if you’ve got the money?.Buy it, you will not be dissapointed. You may need someone with cable knowledge to extend the neccesary cables.

I’ve owned sony tvs in the past, but i still researched quite a few other brands before i bought this to get an idea of what was available, and what to expect. I went for the sony because it seemed to offer good value, and ticked my “must have” boxes – built in hd freeview, 800hrz, enough hdmi/scart/usb access for use with my existing equipment, and wifi connection. It arrived securely packaged, and the assembly instructions were clear and in plain english. It took two of us less than 10 minutes to have it mounted and switched on. The basic set up takes no time at all and there is plenty of scope for tweeking if you’re bothered. The manual is electronic and gives excellent instruction. The picture quality is excellent, and the sound bar gives better than average sound – more than adequate for most domestic situations and much better than the basic ‘back of the monitor’ speakers (although i’ve since gone for a wall mount and 5. The xr800hrz motion makes a real difference and is worth the investment on its own. Freeview hd and wifi work as expected, and internet connection is good.

Well, there are many other reviews on here which convey how i feel – having upgraded from the sony kdl-40w5500 this is like night and day, the colours are so rich, the contrast so high compared to the older tv, once set up correctly (via settings provided by certain review websites) it really is a force to be reckoned withthe sound bar isn’t anything to write home about though, but – realistically – if you’re investing in a tv like this, at the very least you would have your own dedicated sound bar / av setup, so realistically that is a non-issue, and certainly not enough of a failing to take a star away from. Thanks sony, for restoring my faith in you :).

I think there are areas for improvement, especially in the face of the competition. But this tv has the best picture of any led tv currently on the market. The lack of itv player and 4od are annoying.

Life-like picture quality and immersive Full HD 3D

This is a fantastic tv, offering good value for money. For an edge lit led it is about as good as you will find for the price. The default settings need some tuning, but im very happy with the image quality. There is only minimal clouding and black definition is very good. Clear and clear plus are excellent for sports as they negate almost all of the nasty processing effects. Onboard sound is average at best, but adding a decent pair of pc speakers is easy as there is a simple 3. 5mm line out via ‘headphones’. The bonus is that the tv can control this volume via the remote directly, unlike my last toshiba 55 inch. External speakers recommended. Hopefully sony will bring out a full lit led next year rather than just edge lit, even if it costs twice the price.

Always buy sony never let me down the new tv is very good so if you thinking of getting a new tvthen have a good look at sony 1st.

The tv itself is great especially at the price. The angle at which the tv leans back on it’s stand seems more noticeable in real life than the pictures would lead you to believe but is not a major problem. The big problem that i had with the tv was the fact that it 4 or 5 attempts to get it delivered. The courier regularly delivered boxes that were damaged and had actual punctures right through the packaging. They also delivered the tv on different days than had been agreed and when there was no answer left the tv with neighbours. In the end i wrote to the directors and eventually managed to get the tv delivered in an acceptable way. All the guys at amazon customer support were helpful. But it still took over three week, many calls and much hassle to get the product delivered in an acceptable condition.

Wi-Fi for easy access to catch-up TV, movies & apps

I was deliberating between this one and the 753 model and as i couldn’t see much difference between the two apart from a £300 price difference i plumped for the 753 model, admittedly i ordered it from john lewis, then i came across more info that this model was vastly superior in picture quality so i immediately cancelled the 753 and tried to order this from john lewis but alas they don’t stock it any more due to new models being released this spring so i decided to purchase from amazon as i’ve always been happy with and secure in the knowledge they are one of the best for replacements/customer service etc if anything should be amiss. I was somewhat miffed i had to purchase a separate warranty buying from amazon as john lewis offers their own free 5yr one. I only buy extended warranties for an expensive purchase such as this which should last numerous years. Anyway, this beauty arrived very quickly and was very easy to set-up on its included stand. The 6 degree tilt backwards i was worried about before ordering but i have not noticed the tilt whatsoever so it’s not a problem for me as i thought it might be. I was also not keen on the glossy screen, i can’t stand reflections on tv’s. Thankfully it hasn’t been too much of an issue, the only time i’ve noticed a reflection is watching in the evening with a dim lamp next to me with the rest of the room in the dark. I can see a bit of the lamp reflected in the screen but it’s not a big problem to fix, i’ll just need to move the lampcoming from a 32″ hd ready sony bravia that i’ve had approx 7yrs, the 46″ initially looked massive. Within a few days it now looks more normal in my room. I connect the tv, dvd player, sky hd box, xbox etc through a sony amp so i can’t really comment on the poor sound described by others through the tv speakers but modern thin tv’s are designed really to be used with surround sound systems anyway so if you don’t have one make sure to include one in your budget or even a decent soundbar if you don’t have enough room.

Outstanding and totally up to my expectations from sony. The picture is brilliant and does not have that artificial feeling to it that i get from watching many different makes in stores. 3d works very good and nice to have, but 3d blurays are too expensive at the moment, so most viewing in 2d which is excellent, not only in hd, but also standard def including old black & whites. The sound is very good, not excellent, but disable the surround sound effect and you’ll get used to it much better on stereo. The remote works for almost everything attached to the tv including ps3 to watch bluray and panasonic dvd recorder. Great as don’t have to use the ps controller for watching the film, tv remote to control the tv and another remote for the surround sound system. The smart tv (sony network) has many apps and works well. I mostly watch bbc iplayer and euronews on it, but there are other sections for you tube and 3d sony’s collection, good fun. To fit the stand/speaker, i found it easier to turn the tv upside down and lean it against the back of soft sofa, children if any around could hold it in place, then attach the bottom stand/speaker making sure that it’s in correct alignment and front is to the front. A screwdriver is all that’s needed.

Had this tv around a month now and so far cannot fault it. Beautiful design which is stunning to look at with performance to match. Great paired up with my playstation3 just waiting for an excuse to buy a new surround sound system. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a crisp clear picture and dynamic sound. Incredibly easy to set up and use, managed to connect to my wi-fi instantly. Don’t even think about a different tv, this is it.

Built like a tank the picture quality is where this tv excels. I was a little concerned that the ’tilting back’ would be an issue but this apparently is common with all sony tvs but i can safely report that you will not notice it in use. I can’t really say anything more than what’s already been said in various highly rated reviews.

Integrated sound system and 6 degree angle

All the functionality i could ask for, great picture quality, on board sound is o. But not as good as i would have liked, but who uses on board sound with this type of telly ?. A little disappointed that the sound out jack is only a weak mini jack but i use the optical output link to my hifi which works just fine.

I’ve had this tv for about 1 month now and bought it on the basis of the reviews here, so i thought i would add my own 5* review. Setup is very easy, but you will need a cross-head screwdriver to put the stand together (about 10 screws). The instructions say you need two people, but i managed on my own. The difficult bit is picking the screen up and slotting into the stand. The tv can and will topple over if you are not careful and don’t bother tying it down. So if you have kids or animals, you would be well advised to make sure you have the ability to screw into your stand (some fittings come with the tv). It can be tempting not to do this as the instructions leave it in as an optional after-thought and you’ll probably just want to get watching things. The screen is amazing and i love having the hd tuner built-in. The sound is fine for a tv, but doesn’t do the same job as separate amp and speakers. Iplayer, youtube) are great for me, but i was disappointed that the web browser doesn’t allow video playback (i think flash playback specifically). As i would have liked to watch ted. I’ve also just discovered the iphone app.

The quality of the tv reflects my high expectations. All the reviews and experts’ opinions defined this products as the best in the market for similar size and specs, and indeed it is. + 2d standard tv image quality is above average with limited or no noise although the settings must be manually changed to get perfect color balance (especially for movies). + 2d hd definition (720p/1080p) is stunning and without exaggerations is comparable to cinema screens: colors are vivid even under the standard setting and the image fluidity is flawless, especially during prolonged action scenes. If you have the patience and time you can adjust the image according to your taste by changing the many available settings. + 3d not tried yet because out of any logic the tv does not come with 3d spectacles. That is frankly a shame considering the high quality standard of this product – and the price. + audio is fine and after having played around with settings i could get a good forced 3d sound effect. It lacks of a perfect calibration between voice and sound and therefore during actions movies you have to adjust the volume many times according the type of scene. + smart functions are all right even though the navigation through the various menus and options can be slow and not very intuitive sometimes.

This tv is amazing, fantastic quality picture in 2d and brilliant in 3d, easy to set up, a bit difficult to go online, but once sorted it`s easy to use. Catch up missed programs, plug in hard drive to view with no long cables. I would recommend this tv to anyone, and the best price is at amazon.

Got this tv as an upgrade from my earlier sony that i have had for 4 years now. And it has not dissapointed. Picture is absolutely beautiful. The features are out of this world.

This tv is just mind blowing. Gorgeous design and internet functions i dont even know how to use yet. But watching stuff in hd and 3d blows your mind. Its thin and teh colours brightness etc are top notch. Combined with sony surround system it just blows everyone away.

  1. Bought this tv last christmas as a treat to myself and the picture is simply outstanding. You really notice the difference between standard definition and high definition, blacks are black and colours really pop from the screen. The sound from the tv bar is acceptable, however i purchased a bose solo unit and the sound difference is remarkable. I’m delighted with my purchase and would recommend the above combination for those of you who have a reasonable sized lounge. Too large a space and you’ll need to invest in a different sound system, but for a normal house this works great.

I always wanted a sony television and have recommended them to friends and family but each time i went to buy a new set i would spot a great review of another manufacturer then go for that. This time all the reviews pointed to the hx853 series and so i went for it through amazon for convenience and the ease of returns. At first i was shocked by the size, previous samsung was only 42″ but the sony is slim, elegant and incredibly good looking so although the screen is wider it appears to take up less physical space and looks so much better than its predecessor. That said, having had 55″ i would not go back down the scale unless forced since the extra screen space is a boon. Setting up was simple, took bt vision at the same time and added a sony blu ray to the package, all 3 tuned themselves in automatically and the set itself is so sensitive i immediately managed lots more freeview channels even without bt. The sound is fine for me, previous set played through the wifi but no need on this one as it is loud enough and of good stereo reproduction. No doubt surround sound is better but that is extra money and wires so not for now. Lastly picture quality, lots of reviews have went into great detail on this but all i can say is wow, the detail, colours, vibrancy and contrast are spectacular and at times in hd it is like looking out of a window. Watching wildlife hd films is nothing short of amazing and makes the investment worthwhile on its own. Also tried out a 3d blu ray with the sony glasses which was a great success and quite breathtaking considering this is a domestic product designed for a living space.

Apple like treatment on the panel glass extending to the edge where it bonds with aluminium makes this tv gorgeous, über high quality feel. Picture and technicals are great. But sony as an os and web experience has a long way to go. The integrated speaker / stand is a beautiful piece but audio is rather poor so ideal to link with a sound system.

    1. The pro’s — looks fantastic. – sd & hd pictures look insane.- motion is handled flawlessly. – 3d isn’t fantastic but its still fairly good. – lots of connections and ports on the back of the unit. – the freeview tv guide is clear and responsive. It allows you to continue watching your programme. – lots of appsthe cons — using any app/tv catch up programme on the sen feels like a chore.

Great picture, easy to set up, resonable sound without additional av amp or soundbar. Built in wifi and good menus gave easy access to i player etc.

I’ve always liked sony tvs and this one has an excellent picture from all sources – tv/sky/blu-ray – with strong blacks and good contrast – at least as good as my now retired panasonic plasma. I prefer it to the highly-rated samsung tvs which i find too bright and digital looking. The menu system is a little bit too complex and counter-intuitive, but does have lots of options for fine tuning the picture. Having said that, and after lots of fiddling about, i find the default settings strike the best balance, at least to my eyes. Downsides are that the viewing angle is a little narrow, and there is a very slight magenta cast to the picture that is noticeable in some very specific circumstances (dark scenes with heavily graded flesh tones, if you must know). The screen is very reflective, but the 6 degree backward tilt of the stand mitigates this somewhat. The sound, like most tvs of this type, is pretty feeble so i have had to get a soundbar to beef it up a bit (which is a whole other world of pain). And being a “smart” tv it does seem to take 30 seconds or so to get going before it’s possible to access the menu system. Overall, a really good tv but not quite perfect.

      1. Superb picture, worst sound. Buy this tv without any thought if you are going to run the sound through another system. Otherwise you have an amazing picture and rubbish sound. I run my sound through a b&w zeppelin so i have an amazing tv watching and sound experience – you will have to do something similar to get the sound.

    1. I bought the 55″ version of the tv on the back of so many positive reviews but i have to say i felt let down by it and returned it. I currently have a 40″ sony lcd which is a little lost in our room so i’ve been looking for a good 55″ set for a while that didn’t come with samsung es8000 pricing. As i spend a reasonable amount of time on my ps3 input lag, motion clarity etc was all crucial which is why i opted for this set. When i got the set unpacked it looked amazing and really filled the space well but when i switched it on things went downhill. We spend a lot of time watching 720p or 1080p tv and films through apple tv and they did look spectacular but when switched back to sd on freeview it was virtually unwatchable. The few free hd channels looked fine but unfortunately there simply arent enough channels to only watch hd. It took some soul searching as this was the tv i had dreamed of, but it couldn’t stay it really was that bad on sd. So it was packed up and the old set re-instated and life was good, if a little distant, again. My advice would be if you have sky, virgin and only watch hd then go for it, i’ve no doubt you’ll be happy. On the other hand if you’re stuck with freeview you’d be better to have a good look around before buying, just make sure you get to see the sd picture.

I have always liked sony bravia tvs for their crisp and clear screens but this one is out of this world the colours are so vibrant and clear. Like the other reviews the sound bar doesn’t sound great but have been spoilt by the sound from using my bose ipod doc as a speaker (highly recommended) for the past year so i recommend just using the sound bar as a stand. I often stream ice hockey from nhl gamecenter via my laptop and even this looks 50% better compared to my old bravia. This can also be put into stimulated 3d mode. The 3d to me seems better than the samsung smart tv that my friend has mainly due to the 3d glasses as you can’t see the flicker on them they also block out a lot of the light to to improve the experience. My only disappointment would be the internet it is a little slow and using the ipad for the curser is a little jersey but for what you might need it for it is still usable. Would i buy this tv again yes. Also got the free smart 3d blueray player and the bond collection and spider-man 3d blue ray free bond and spider-man through redemption though hope this was helpful.

My review is about how to get the best picture out of your new sony hx853, and calibrate it to a near professional standard. The sony hx853 has a very good ‘out of the box’ picture, but you could have an excellent picture for a true cinematic experience ‘as the director intended’. When you’ve spent all that money of a top of the range tv, why not now try and get the best possible picture out of it you canmost tv’s and the sony included exaggerate the colour blue in the display, which like washing powder make your whites brighter. Some people like their tv’s this way, like turning up the bass on your stereo when listening to music – its a personal preference, but if you want the picture correct like you are in a cinema your picture will typically need correcting. Before you do this there a a bunch of forums that have lots of helpful hints how to do this and it is worth reading through them (watching their videos)to understand what you are trying to achieve. I would recommend going to the avforum website first as they have helpful videos why you need to calibrate your tv in the first place [. ]to be able to calibrate your tv you will also need a couple of things1. A calibration dvd with colour filters (most thx certified dvd’s come with test patterns but not with the glasses required for setting your colour balance). You can also download a free test pattern disc from [. ]a calibration disc with get you a lot more out of your tv, especially using the test patterns to correctly set your brightness and contrast, so your whites are white and your blacks are a gorgeous inky black without loss of detail (eg a scene in a dark cave, where the whole thing look black and there are no shades of dark grey)a while ago for my previous tv i brought digital essentials dvd/bluray off here on amazon which has all the test patterns and colour filters for setting up your tv as best as you can, with out going to the next almost professional level.

    1. I’ll keep this a short review. After months of researching i decided to stay away from the samsung es series. V but please read forums as i’ve read loads from people who have had problems with the samsung’s bleeeding & clouding and then having difficulty from samsung in getting repairs/replacements. I decided it was down to the panasonic 55vt50 or the sony 55hx853. I went with the sony and wow. This is a fantastic looking tv and a great feature in any living room.

  16. My girlfriend got me this bit of kit for christmas/30th birthday. All i can say is, why the hell didn’t she get it sooner. This set has a display and picture quality like nothing else. I now play my ps3 in 3d most of the time. Killzone 3, uncharted 3, gran tourismo 5, crysis 2, are the games that i am going through again at present and i just cant get my head round how amazing it is. Go and buy one now this kit rocks. I was even given 5 pairs of glasses by various friends that she had conspired with. Funnily enough they have all been round to play.

The 55inch version last weekend from my local sony shop (come on amazon keep up with the best possible deals) got a free bluray player s490 and a 5 year warranty 6 blurays and i can send off for the james bond boxset and spiderman trilogy and the new spiderman in 3d for £1399 inc delivery. But the selling point for me is the truely fantastic picture , freeview hd looks amazing and even the normal channels are very ,very good considering the screen size, and blurays look stunning. Only downside are the remotes a bit old fashioned, but the t. V design won,t be going out of fashion anytime soon it looks fab, 3d. Not really interested but the active glasses are on offer at the moment that,s probley because sony are going passive this year. V with amazing picture quality it,s a great deal.

    1. Ordered this tv from amazon before christmas with next day delivery. The delivery process was completely appalling, they gave 3 different delivery days (the first of which was 3 days after the “next day” order) and failed to actually get the product to me until 6 days later. The customer service was terrible, the first unit appears to have been stolen in transit. It was scanned out of the warehouse but mysteriously never arrived at the courier?.I ended up taking 3 days off work for something that should have been delivered on a saturday. Anyway the tv is fabulous, i was finally trading up from a big old trusty sony crt. Hd freeview picture is brilliant, up scaling on non hd channels is pretty good, depends on broadcast quality. I am most impressed with smart tv function, netflix via the inbuilt wifi is high def quality, my data usage will be going through the roof. Lovefilm is not of the same standard, it is much lower quality. I will be cancelling the lovefilm after the free trial.
