Libratone Zipp Mini Wireless tooth and Wifi Speaker – Graphite Grey – Really pleased with the device

Good sound, but it is quite large. First impressions of this are acoustically promising. First impressions of receiving the box were daunting. It comes in a huge box and the speaker itself is fairly substantial. Actually the box does afford it very good protection which is appropriate to a high quality product. In order to deliver a decent sound from a speaker like this you do need some space to allow for sub-woofer to produce adequate bass. This does that and the sound is very good, easily ‘filling’ a medium sized living/dining room. I’ve given it four stars rather than five because as it was much bigger than i expected it does tend to attract attention, rather than being a discreet unit. My style preference is for the latter. Using it is pretty easy and it connected to bluetooth on my phone without any problem at all.

I have tried many airplay/bluetooth speakers over the last couple of years. From bose, philips, pioneer, ihome and anker to name the best. However this zipp mini i just bought for our kitchen is the best by an absolute mile. It is amazing is so many waysi like to use airplay as i like to use the whaale app to stream to multiple rooms so having an airplay speaker is my preference. The zipps airplay functionality is fantastic. Nice touches like being able to play when speaker is in standby means you never have to touch it. You can control it from your iphone. I’ve had no problems with jumpy playback as some people have said. I would put those symptoms down to a poor wifi signal or a poor quality router that can’t handle the data streams.

The quality is very good but above all the sound is excellent. The customer services is also very good as i needed there help. If you buy it, you will not regret. Here are the specifications for the Libratone Zipp Mini Wireless tooth and Wifi Speaker – Graphite Grey:

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • 360 degree FullRoom sound
  • Fully portable with built-in re-chargeable batteries
  • Stream any audio or video service including 1000’s of Internet radio stations via the Libratone app
  • Start with one, then pair up to six speakers around your home
  • Easy setup with touch controls and the Libratone app

This is a great solution in the crossover of both. If you consider wifi speakers and bluetooth speakers as separate sets, this is a great solution in the crossover of both. That venn diagram set is quite small if you want home speakers that operate on wifi and allow zoning as well as being able to grab one and head off to the beach with it using your phone to drive it on bluetooth. The sound is great and i got a few admiring comments but i have a suspicion the bose soundlink is louder and better (but believe it doesn’t sync with other speakers or operate on apple airplay). I reckon sonos is better at home too – from sound and power point of view – but sonos aren’t a portable solution. My only gripe is that to take advantage of multiple speakers at home, the price is pretty prohibitive.

Really pleased with the device. Purchased the libtatone zipp from john lewis ( sorry amazon) having listened to it in a rather noisy shop environment. On getting it home and unpacked from its rather substantial tubular box i found it to be a quality product well made and an attractive design. I spent about 10 minutes setting it up using the libtatone app on an iphone 7. The instructions supplied are easy to follow and i soon had it playing music via airplay from my itunes library on my iphone. I also found it easy to set up bluetooth and play music from my google music. Sound quality from a speaker of this size is very good plenty of base plus good midrange unfortunately can’t comment on the top end due loss of high frequency hearing due to age, though my neighbor’s kid’s say it sounds ok. Volume level is more than adequate on internal battery or the power supply. Got to say my initial thoughts are that this is an excellent piece of kit even at £245. Will definitely buy at least another one (from amazon) as it possible to pair up to 6 together in different rooms.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Very Happy with product
  • Like the boom from this speaker Possibly need to use
  • but with an existing n300 router performance was not great and need to uprate my router to a dual

A very loud wireless speaker in such a small form + good quality sound + some elegant design touches. I have tried a good number of wireless speakers in recent years by makers including bose, sony, loewe and others. This libratone zipp mini probably ranks amongst my top 2 wireless speakers. I think it delivers excellent quality sound in an attractive package with some nifty features that help to turn it into a luxury item that is quite fun and pleasing to own. I’ll break my review down into things i like and then things i like less. Things i like* the first thing you notice is that this speaker can get loud. In fact, i was surprised at how loud the zipp mini gets. Compared to several other wireless speakers at around the same price point, i think the zipp mini produces the highest volumes. Of course, it is important that there is no distortion at high volumes and i was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no distortion at all. On some other speakers at a similar price point (and made by very high-end brands), there can often be some distortion in the quality of sound as you get to the very loudest levels that a speaker is able to produce.

Libratone zipp mini: solution to wifi connection problem. Good product (stylish & decent sound quality) but, as other reviewers have mentioned, although bluetooth setup is easy it is more difficult setting up the wi-fi connection. But, in my case, the solution was easy once i had worked out what was going wrong. I tried using the libratone app to set up the wi-fi connection but as soon as the set up was complete the zipp mini lost the connection and ‘forgot’ the settings. I then tried setting up the connection using my computer – see libratone web support called ‘zipp/zipp mini – wi-fi setup (windows pc/phone, blackberry)’ on how to do this – but again the connection failed. The solution was simple – your wi-fi network ssid (the name your network is called) must only have letters & numbers with no ‘special’ characters. I have a bt router and the ssid was ‘bthub6-ab12’ and the libratone setup software was not recognising the ‘-‘ (dash). I therefore changed the ssid (using bt smart hub manager) so the dash was removed – now called ‘bthub6ab12’. Once i made this change the wi-fi setup worked perfectly (i used my computer not the app) and was able to connect all my devices, to be fair this ‘problem’ is mentioned in libratone web support but it took some time to find the solution.

Good – but nowhere near as good as the old original zipp. . I owned the original zipp and loved it – spectacularly bright natural sound for all kinds of music, including classical. Very loud, great bass, amazingly clear treble. I gave it away when the new model came out, under the assumption that this new model (zipp 2015) could only be better. Sadly i was wrong – almost to the point of wanting to return it. The bass is still strong and impressive, but the amazing tweeters have been downgraded from the stunning ribbon tweeters to more traditional units – and the high-end clarity is now quite mediocre – none of the lovely clarity and realism of the original model. It sounds ‘closed in’ rather than open and bright. Also it’s overall not as loud as the previous model, despite the on-paper-claimed increase in wattage. I would have recommended the old model to anyone to buy without bothering to demo – but i would not recommend this one unless you give it a good try and like it. Seems like libratone (now bought out by a larger company apparently) have lost their way and don’t give sound quality the high priority they did before.

Fantastic speaker secretly trouncing bose, sony and sonos. Had this a couple of months now and i’ve been really pleased and impressed with it. I am very pleased to have bought this over the sonos, bose and sony offerings at this price point. It works in every respect, and works well and pretty damn classily too. It’s wifi friendly, easy to set up, reliable, stays connected and is always available as a sound output on all the 5000 devices in this house. The app is sleek, modern and easy to use, and makes the perfect accompaniment to this pleasing speaker. You can keep this on the charge lead or take it to the middle of a field and use via bluetooth. It’s got everything it needs to be called a, truly, wireless speaker.

The best – the very best portable wifi speakers i have heard to date – fantastic. It looks like something for taking coffee to work in, but don’t let that fool youit arrived a couple of hours ago, and once looking at the package, i couldn’t wait to get stuck in. The packaging exudes quality, it’s presented like a crown jewel. It couldn’t be better secured if it were a radioactive isotope. Very little literature in the ‘tube’ but what is not included in print is available to download on the libratone website. A power adaptor, which looks like its taking a break from a place on the wall in an art gallery – lovely looking thing it is, also has a european converter as well as the familiar uk plug. Even the cable tidy as part of the packaging around the braided power cord is bespoke.

With the speaker on the landing window it fills the whole house with beautiful beautiful sound the app was easy enough to setup. Definitely a nervous buy with this, after reading all the mixed reviews i wasnt sure what to expectpleasantly surprised by the quality of the sound from this speaker. I live in a 3 bed new build house, with the speaker on the landing window it fills the whole house with beautiful beautiful soundthe app was easy enough to setup, doesnt get a 5 star because the app isnt as responsive as you would expect (well we are all spoilt by how quickly modern phones/tablets respond etc)would definitley recommend this over the sonos or bose speakers if only for the fact that it doesnt need mains powerblasted music for my nye party for 4-5 hours straight :).

Little bird with a big voice. I have a few wireless speakers, including a sonos play 3, but the libratone zipp really does pack a big punch for the price. The support for this speaker by libratone can’t be faulted, as over the time i have owned it quite a few firmware updates have been made available, each enhancing the unit. The biggest was in march 2017 which reduced the startup time from over 30 seconds to under 10 seconds. It also added a standby sleep function to reduce power consumption. The already long list of supported functions will be increased towards the end of 2017 or the beginning of 2018 with the addition of amazon alexa and apple airplay 2. This will really place the zipp at the top of the pile when it comes to wireless speakers. I know sonos will be adding alexa support to existing speakers but only via the alexa app or an echo dot. If they update the existing lineup to include airplay 2 then it would be a tight race, providing you did not want battery portabilityfor android and windows fans the sonos may offer a better route, as long as you accept the limitations but for apple and mac users the libratone zipp is hard to beat due to the simplicity of airplay and the fact you can stream anything. One plus point of the zipp over sonos is the fact you can preset up to 5 internet radio stations or spotify playlists that can be selected from the speaker without any need to use an app.

Great sound right up to flat out. Just brilliant as a ‘floating speaker. Could do with being louder for my taste. Is not obvious sometimes whether i’m playing spotify thru bluetooth or wifi. It has lost settings a few times after i killed the app on phone and also switched to radio once. Takes a while to start up and be ready. My biggest negative is that my phone notifications keep interrupting play on spotify. Email or txt or wats app comes in and the music stops and needs to be restarted manually. Also was shocked when my first phone call came out over the speaker at near full volume. I have sorted this now by changes to settings but notifications are still a problem. Sounds like many more megs than positives but i really am very pleased with this overall.

    1. Speaker sound quality is reasonable, although it keeps dropping connection which is very annoying having to sync speaker & ipod most times which can take 5-10 mins. Overall not worth the price tag.

  7. Early days with this speaker but so far so good, well for the main part. Early days with this speaker but so far so good, well for the main part. After fighting with this thing for an hour trying to setup through the android app i gave up and used a pc which took me all of 2 minutes to do, so if you can only set this up with a phone i would warn you away from it as i just could not get it to connect to my wireless network. Bluetooth worked fine, but i find the sound quality a little lacking when streaming this way. Setup aside this is a great bit of kit. It looks fantastic for starters. I went with the lagoon green model which is really nice. Obviously the main selling point for this speaker is the sound quality, which thankfully, is really good. I’m coming from an old sony speaker which has served me well over the years but this thing blows it away. I do find it quite bass heavy, and i don’t believe there is a way to adjust this aside from the pre-sets in the app.

      1. Finally. The speaker i have been looking for. After trying several alternatives i have found the speaker for me. It might not be the loudest, but it delivers a refined sound and can go plenty loud for me without breaking up or distorting. It’s also the swiss army knife of portable speakers, featuring bt, airplay, spotify connect, aux in, usb in, portability with 10 hours of battery, multi-room (stereo or left and right channels), internet radio built in, several colours etc etc. You pay for the privilege, but there is nothing out there that touches the zipp for it’s all rounded abilities. The only reservations i have is the time it takes for the app to load up the speakers, but that’s not really something one has to do that much. For the record, i tried a sonos 5 (overkill and quite expensive), yamaha wx010 (speakers went out of sync) and ruark mr1 mk2. (quality and finishing was not great on a £300+ speakers plus limited connectivity).

    1. But with an existing n300 router performance was not great and need to uprate my router to a dual. Would have rated 5 star but with an existing n300 router performance was not great and need to uprate my router to a dual band ac1900.

    1. Great speaker and there are ways to fix the issues some have mentioned. I have several airplay speakers including ones from more well-known hi-fi manufacturers and the zipp is my clear favourite. So much so, i now have two and if i feel i need another airplay speaker, that will also be a zipp. I’m not going to repeat the other reviews but just confirm that the battery and the one-touch radio function are killer apps for me and i get annoyed at my other speakers–including more expensive ones–for not having these features. What i will talk about though is some of the negatives that have been mentioned in these reviews, the first is patchy airplay. Sadly airplay isn’t as solid as sonos’ wireless so there is no such thing as a 100% solid airplay speaker as airplay itself isn’t 100%. However, what i have found is that the zipp (and other airplay speakers) can be patchy when on a 2. I moved mine (and my phone and mac) onto a 5ghz network and pretty much all the airplay glitches went away. Second negative i’ll deal with is the sleep function.
