NETGEAR RBK50 Orbi Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System Up to 5000 sq ft of Wi-Fi Coverage : Fixed my WiFi Problems but not as well or as easily as I hoped when I paid £400.

The orbi has completely transformed the internet access in my house. I used to use the box provided by virgin but the internet speed was up and down, signal strength patchy, even in a relatively small flat, to the point where my multi-room speaker system kept cutting out. Since installing the orbi and chaining my virgin box to modem only mode (easy to do), i have had full speed internet access and a strong signal throughout the flat. I was surprised by how much difference it has made.

After years of putting up with weak wifi, or none at all, in parts of my house, using apple extreme with an express extender i finally decided to make a change. The orbi system arrived beautifully packaged and set itself up even more easily than the instructions implied – as i didn’t even need to log in to the netgear website since the orbi system did it automatically for me. Once it was set up i now have maximum strength signals everywhere in the house – and even in the garden, which i have never had before. It is a little bit more expensive than some competitive systems – but you get what you pay for.

NETGEAR RBK50 Orbi Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System Up to 5000 sq ft of Wi-Fi Coverage, Works with Amazon Alexa (AC3000 Tri Band Home Network with Router and Satellite)

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • Fast whole home Wi-Fi system – covers up to 5000 sq feet with high performance Wi-Fi; kit includes Wi-Fi router and satellites
  • Tri-Band technology – unlike other Wi-Fi sets that lose speed as you add devices, Orbi routers maintain data flow for your connected devices using a dedicated backhaul connection
  • Single Wi-Fi network name – provides seamless room-to-room roaming throughout your home
  • Guest network – easily set up a separate and secure Wi-Fi network for visitors and guests to use; an ideal web gear combo for movie streaming and gaming sessions with friends and family
  • Compatible with Amazon Echo/Alexa – control your home network using voice commands

Very expensive but it’s gotta be said netgear have really hit the mark with these. . They replaced my linksys ea8500 which had absolutely shocking 5ghz range, now literally every inch of my home has 5bar *excellent* signal strength. Will be using these for years to come. I also get my full 300mbps virgin media speed aswell.

I love this it’s better than i thought a recommended buy.

Fixed my wifi problems but not as well or as easily as i hoped when i paid £400. . Update:after some back and forth with customer service (who are very responsive and helpful by the way) some of the issues have been fixed. Particularly i refer to the lack of vlan tagging (mentioned below). This functionality was added in an update and i have now managed to get this working such that i am now using the orbi with my internet and internet over tv service successfully. I have retired my old router and am now just using the orbi. Hence point 2) below is now moot. There are still ease of use issues with this but the functionality is now there and its working in my case. Customer service have also promised to address point 4) below and so hopefully later versions of the software will be much easier to set up for those (almost everyone) who dont know what beamforming and mimo are or that they must have them switched on to get the best out of this product. Net result is that i am happier with this product than i was when i wrote this review but i am not changing the rating yet as the biggest issue point 4) is not yet fixed. For £400, none of these issues should have occurred and it should have been a snap to set up.

Simple, effective and a joy to set up. . Isn’t it wonderful when technology catches up. There i was trying to work out exactly how i was going to drill in and out of walls in my old house to set up wifi access points when my research led me to this alternative solution. It arrives neatly packaged with simple instructions. First i accessed my current router – a sky hub – and switched off the 5 ghz wifi, but out of curiosity left the 2. I then connected the first orbi – a large but not unattractive thing – to the sky modem and powered it up. I then placed one of the satellites in my office and the other upstairs and powered them up. I opened my iphone, and downloaded the netgear orbi app. The instructions are so simple, connect to the new wifi – tick – reboot the sky modem and wait for the orbi to connect to the internet – tick.

The orbi router satellite mix was a perfect solution. Happily the telephone support was up to. Orbi conquered the wifi distribution issues that others failed to address. I tried extenders and repeaters but nothing came near to my delivered speed unless you practically sat on top of the wifi device in question. We live in a 2500 sqft house build around a lot of structural steel. The orbi router satellite mix was a perfect solution. Happily the telephone support was up to the mark and solved some initial set up issues. With a fttp speed of i00 mps, i get 100 down and 75mps upload wifi speed throughout most of the 2 story house.

Replacing the abysmal talktalk super router, the orbi system allows all my wifi products to connect with ease. Coverage is good even though we have thick walls, streaming in two rooms simultaneously is no problem and both orbi units are really smart, i am able to hide all wiring and they were so easy to set up – i had one small problem and rang the helpline – a long wait but they were extremely helpful and had it sorted in minutes. Thoroughly recommend this system. I only have one criticism – the lack of any light on the face (the blue top light disappears when all is ok), i find myself connecting to wifi just to check the unit is still on.

Great device easy to set up and has improved the wifi fi speeds in our house no end. . Great device easy to set up and has improved the wifi fi speeds in our house no end.

While the unit is expensive, i must say that i have tried other boosters and while they do work to some extent, they are nowhere as good as the orvibo. I found that setting up the unit was very very easy. Before using the orvibo i was getting an average download of 35 to 45 mbps i am now getting nothing less than 65 mbps. As i said an expensive unit but it definitely works for me. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Completely fixed persistent problem with wi-fi coverage.

I now have seamless wifi throughout the. Have been cursed with awful wireless problems since moving into new house (with solid brick walls), virgin superhub with powerline adapters have been awful. I was highly sceptical before the orbi arrived and it was only a matter of time before i was going to return it. But it has been nothing short of a revelation. I now have seamless wifi throughout the house, tv works perfectly, no more buffering, new devices work without upsetting the virgin hub. I’m well impressednb after update, orbi stopped working – i had to contact netgear through live chat to sort this out. Beware its not as user friendly as one might hope. I would probably reduce to 4 stars but it just works so well (when it does).

Super simple setup & amazing performance. I have virgin media 200mb/s broadband. I have finally had enough of superhub 2 ac,so decided to upgrade my router. I have also ordered virgin’s hub 3. 0, but decidedi will only keep it as a back up, just in case if sh 2 ac fails. Please remember you still need your virgin media router, but on the plus sideit will only run in modem mode, for which it is more than good enoughanyway back to subject of netgear orbi. In two words: just worksbrilliant wifi router. Super simple setup, comes with easy quick guide to help you. You can use your smartphone with an orbi app to go through setup process, which is a joyi literally had it up and running in 10mins.No issues, no problems with installation.

Worth the over priced price tag. We have had the netgear rbk50 router and satellite system, plus an extra satellite (later addition), running as an access point in our office for since 3 mar 2017. The office is around 3000sq feet and over two floors. The office building is old (1850), mostly open plan with a couple of smaller rooms, a kitchen and a larger meeting space and since adding an extra satellite, we haven’t had any problems with signal strength, or dropout. I’ve been pleased with the system, although i do feel that the £500 setup (router and satellite system, plus an extra satellite) is pretty steep.

      1. Rbk 50 – 5,000 square feet is only 4,000 sq feet. The description says that the rbk50 twin pack covers 5,000 sq feet, but the actual box clearly says 4,000 sq feet, so it has 20% less coverage than stated here. This obviously has an impact if you’re looking to cover a large area and it is shocking that amazon / netgear have allowed this to mislead consumers buying the units. The unit works well enough and is easy to set up, but the range on it is the same as my apple airport station, so i’m left with the option of having to spend another £190 to buy another satellite unit.

    1. Amazon prime did not disappoint. I’m not a techy so don’t get in. Bought this to replace an asus router where the ethernet ports had failed, it was a need it and need it now, amazon prime did not disappoint. I’m not a techy so don’t get in to the details i just want something that works and that is what i got it. The range of the wifi is brilliant, does more than what i need really. The link between the router and the satellite is better than i expected, i think i’ve got quite a large house and the router is in the top right at the front, the satellite is in the bottom left at the back, no problems with the internal connection. I’ve been using for over two weeks now and have not had any of the issues that other reviewers seem to have been experiencing so at the moment all good.

Orbi rbk40 fast setup, fast wi-fi. I needed a router that could penetrate the 60cm (2ft) thick walls of my old spanish farmhouse. The setup was quick and simple, more or less just pressing buttons. Once i’d found the optimum position for the satellite unit i was amazed at the quality and speed of the links for all connected items. Once up and running i found there are many more setting options for those who need them but it was it was gratifying to find it worked straight out of the box without the need for tweaking. Although the initial cost seemed quite high, it does exactly what it advertises and turns out to be money very well spent.

    1. Top internet speed and performance in every room of my house. So many people complain about the fact their wi-fi signal is terrible in certain rooms of their house. Most people blame their service provider. People should remember – the wi-fi router your service provider gives you is a cheap piece of kit. Orbi is like the bmw i8 of your internet system. Orbi brings me a full wi-fi signal to every room in my house. I’m getting max speed everywhere and my life has fewer frustrations.

  10. Excellent kit – shame about the plug/transformer. Selected to cope with old long house and very thick walls. Relatively easy to set up out of the box and get running. Mobile app a little limited. Ended up purchasing additional satellite to provide satisfactory coverage, including garden. Would recommend for challenging wifi areas. I have not given 5 stars solely because of the ridiculous plug arrangement whereby the transformer is part of the three pin plug, resulting in a large and unwieldy unit projecting from the wall and thus making it impossible to locate easily behind furniture. Given the design aesthetic behind the rest of the system (coloured lights, shape etc) this is simply inexplicable. Did briefly consider dissembling plug and creating bespoke arrangement, but suspect warranty would suffer.

A great product after the firmware update. I have initially decided to return the item due to unstable connection with ios devices. I am now keeping it and is a very happy user. After the latest update of firmware in sep/nov, the router is now fast (quick faster than my old airport extreme due to much wider coverage of signal through the dedicated backhaul) and stable. As long as netgear is willing to invest resources to provide good software to support the excellent hardware – this will continue to be a great product.

Set and forget – we’re taking it for granted now. . Ok, so it isn’t a cheap item, but if you are looking for a ‘set up and forget’ system then this would be a good choice. It certainly has been doing the job in our house for some months now. The range of the device is very satisfying – you might even be able to place the unit in the right spot right away with very little further moving around needed. Ours was plugged in to our existing router and i hope i understood the instructions correctly on that point. But, basically, that’s all there to it. It solved our connection issues immediately. What’s not to like (apart from the price, perhaps)?.Oh, and it isn’t the ugliest item either, so that’s a wee bonus.

I know how very good wifi everywhere in my 3 story house. Easy to configure yet advanced enough for the tech savvy.

      1. Performance seems to be good. Our house is two stories and 2000 square. This is the second unit that we received; the first didn’t work at all, we couldn’t connect to it. Set-up is a bit fiddly – you should watch the video on youtube – but it went quite smoothly in the end. Performance seems to be good. Our house is two stories and 2000 square foot. The router is in one corner of the house and the satellite is in the upstairs bedroom furthest away from it. The signal is strong throughout the house.

    1. After checking out a few of the cheaper options i decided not to skimp and went for the orbi over mesh wifi sytems. This is mainly due to the sheer power of the system and the fact that its not a mesh so there is very little drop in throughput for the satellite node. I needed strongest signal possible in my office which is some 70ft or so from the router (a tired virgin super hub 3. 0 which used to kick out a good signal). The orbi system covers this easily and i am consistently getting 180mbps downloads. This is with the router and satellite 40ft, and 4 walls away from each other. Out goes all my other wifi kit and powerline adaptors.
