NETGEAR RBK53 Orbi Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System Up to 7500 sq ft Coverage : Great device easy to set up and has improved the wifi fi speeds in our house no end.

After years of putting up with weak wifi, or none at all, in parts of my house, using apple extreme with an express extender i finally decided to make a change. The orbi system arrived beautifully packaged and set itself up even more easily than the instructions implied – as i didn’t even need to log in to the netgear website since the orbi system did it automatically for me. Once it was set up i now have maximum strength signals everywhere in the house – and even in the garden, which i have never had before. It is a little bit more expensive than some competitive systems – but you get what you pay for.

Like many reviewers, i live in a 3 story brick house, 1870s, and always had troubles with my wifi. The orbi replaced a nighthawk with an extender, giving me 5 ssid to choose between. Recently was getting dropages at least 1 or 2 per hour. So reserched a bit, saw the terrific comments on the orbi and got it. A bit pricey but it works really well, am v impressed. Had a bit of trouble linking the satellite, but i am pretty sure it was my fault for not following the instructions correctly. Anyway, i just restarted, took less then 30 minutes. Another 30 minutes changing the wifi settings on everything in the house. Like others, i can’t resist doing a network speed test just to see the results – in one part of the house it went up 5x.

Very well thought of system but i need a three units system to cover my flat. . I bought this 2 unit package after reading lots of thorough reviews and clearly the orbi came out first in most of them. I was extremely pleased with the design and the set-up, all well though of but i was disappointed with the performances. I leave in an 1500sq/ft three floors maisonette and i couldn’t get a 5ghz connection on the floor left without a satellite. And when i tested it with an iphone app, it showed big differences in throughput too. So for a 3 floors flat, i would need a 2nd satellite, hence a device on each floor. Which then in turn would make the orbi the most expensive system to buy. And not only that but the 3 units package (called rbk53 on netgear website) is not even available in the uk unfortunately. So i have returned the units and i guess i will try their competitor the linksys velop, see if it works better. To sum it up, the main flow of this non-mesh system is that your router must be in the centre of the house and that consequently one satellite might not be enough. Also if you need to connect an appletv with an ethernet cable, then you need a satellite near enough. And that would leave a signal too weak in the room left without a unit.

NETGEAR RBK53 Orbi Whole Home Wi-Fi Mesh System Up to 7500 sq ft Coverage (AC3000 Tri-Band with Router and 2 Satellites) : Excellent kit – shame about the plug/transformer. Selected to cope with old long house and very thick walls. Relatively easy to set up out of the box and get running. Mobile app a little limited. Ended up purchasing additional satellite to provide satisfactory coverage, including garden. Would recommend for challenging wifi areas. I have not given 5 stars solely because of the ridiculous plug arrangement whereby the transformer is part of the three pin plug, resulting in a large and unwieldy unit projecting from the wall and thus making it impossible to locate easily behind furniture. Given the design aesthetic behind the rest of the system (coloured lights, shape etc) this is simply inexplicable. Did briefly consider dissembling plug and creating bespoke arrangement, but suspect warranty would suffer.

Great coverage but doesn’t support bt tv. Easy to setup and great wifi coverage. I’ve never been able to cover the whole house with a single router and finally the two units give great speeds everywhere. However, the orbi firmware currently will not support bt tv/youview. Until they fix this i’ve had to set the orbi to access point mode and connect it up to the bt homehub.

Fixed my wifi problems but not as well or as easily as i hoped when i paid £400. . Update:after some back and forth with customer service (who are very responsive and helpful by the way) some of the issues have been fixed. Particularly i refer to the lack of vlan tagging (mentioned below). This functionality was added in an update and i have now managed to get this working such that i am now using the orbi with my internet and internet over tv service successfully. I have retired my old router and am now just using the orbi. Hence point 2) below is now moot. There are still ease of use issues with this but the functionality is now there and its working in my case. Customer service have also promised to address point 4) below and so hopefully later versions of the software will be much easier to set up for those (almost everyone) who dont know what beamforming and mimo are or that they must have them switched on to get the best out of this product. Net result is that i am happier with this product than i was when i wrote this review but i am not changing the rating yet as the biggest issue point 4) is not yet fixed. For £400, none of these issues should have occurred and it should have been a snap to set up.

Worked straight out the box. I have 5 teenage kids in the house, each with some combination of a console/laptop/phone/tablet, also a printer, two cameras, several tvs and my own phone/tablet etc. On average 30 devices are connected to the router, so i was very dubious about upgrading my asus 68u to a mesh system but my ears couldn’t take the complaining about dead spots and drop outs. I have a fair it knowledge, but networking is not my specialality. After reading about several mesh setups i plumped for the netgear as it seemed to allow more (albeit limited) control over settings on the router and decent throughput and signal strength. Setup needed to be quick – teenager internet withdrawal symptoms are painful. I took everything out of the box, turned off my virgin router, connected the orbi to it, switched everything back on together and prayed. One minute later i had internet on the orbi, both orbis were talking to each other and there was peace in the house. It worked, everything connected happily to the network and throughput seems impressive and consistant. The control over the orbis’ though the web panel though was basic to say the least (v1. Something) so, having seen v2. 0 was out there i applied the upgrade to the orbi, again very simple and wow they have made some impressive changes.

I know how very good wifi everywhere in my 3 story house. Easy to configure yet advanced enough for the tech savvy.

While the unit is expensive, i must say that i have tried other boosters and while they do work to some extent, they are nowhere as good as the orvibo. I found that setting up the unit was very very easy. Before using the orvibo i was getting an average download of 35 to 45 mbps i am now getting nothing less than 65 mbps. As i said an expensive unit but it definitely works for me. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Love my orbi wi-fi system. . It’s stabilised my whole home network after years of trying different routers/modems/extenders. Bit pricey but worth every penny to me on my years of wasted time troubleshooting.

  1. Amazon prime did not disappoint. I’m not a techy so don’t get in. Bought this to replace an asus router where the ethernet ports had failed, it was a need it and need it now, amazon prime did not disappoint. I’m not a techy so don’t get in to the details i just want something that works and that is what i got it. The range of the wifi is brilliant, does more than what i need really. The link between the router and the satellite is better than i expected, i think i’ve got quite a large house and the router is in the top right at the front, the satellite is in the bottom left at the back, no problems with the internal connection. I’ve been using for over two weeks now and have not had any of the issues that other reviewers seem to have been experiencing so at the moment all good.

  2. Orbi rbk40 fast setup, fast wi-fi. I needed a router that could penetrate the 60cm (2ft) thick walls of my old spanish farmhouse. The setup was quick and simple, more or less just pressing buttons. Once i’d found the optimum position for the satellite unit i was amazed at the quality and speed of the links for all connected items. Once up and running i found there are many more setting options for those who need them but it was it was gratifying to find it worked straight out of the box without the need for tweaking. Although the initial cost seemed quite high, it does exactly what it advertises and turns out to be money very well spent.

Simple, effective and a joy to set up. . Isn’t it wonderful when technology catches up. There i was trying to work out exactly how i was going to drill in and out of walls in my old house to set up wifi access points when my research led me to this alternative solution. It arrives neatly packaged with simple instructions. First i accessed my current router – a sky hub – and switched off the 5 ghz wifi, but out of curiosity left the 2. I then connected the first orbi – a large but not unattractive thing – to the sky modem and powered it up. I then placed one of the satellites in my office and the other upstairs and powered them up. I opened my iphone, and downloaded the netgear orbi app. The instructions are so simple, connect to the new wifi – tick – reboot the sky modem and wait for the orbi to connect to the internet – tick.

      1. Top internet speed and performance in every room of my house. So many people complain about the fact their wi-fi signal is terrible in certain rooms of their house. Most people blame their service provider. People should remember – the wi-fi router your service provider gives you is a cheap piece of kit. Orbi is like the bmw i8 of your internet system. Orbi brings me a full wi-fi signal to every room in my house. I’m getting max speed everywhere and my life has fewer frustrations.

A great product after the firmware update. I have initially decided to return the item due to unstable connection with ios devices. I am now keeping it and is a very happy user. After the latest update of firmware in sep/nov, the router is now fast (quick faster than my old airport extreme due to much wider coverage of signal through the dedicated backhaul) and stable. As long as netgear is willing to invest resources to provide good software to support the excellent hardware – this will continue to be a great product.

      1. Set and forget – we’re taking it for granted now. . Ok, so it isn’t a cheap item, but if you are looking for a ‘set up and forget’ system then this would be a good choice. It certainly has been doing the job in our house for some months now. The range of the device is very satisfying – you might even be able to place the unit in the right spot right away with very little further moving around needed. Ours was plugged in to our existing router and i hope i understood the instructions correctly on that point. But, basically, that’s all there to it. It solved our connection issues immediately. What’s not to like (apart from the price, perhaps)?.Oh, and it isn’t the ugliest item either, so that’s a wee bonus.

Performance seems to be good. Our house is two stories and 2000 square. This is the second unit that we received; the first didn’t work at all, we couldn’t connect to it. Set-up is a bit fiddly – you should watch the video on youtube – but it went quite smoothly in the end. Performance seems to be good. Our house is two stories and 2000 square foot. The router is in one corner of the house and the satellite is in the upstairs bedroom furthest away from it. The signal is strong throughout the house.

      1. After checking out a few of the cheaper options i decided not to skimp and went for the orbi over mesh wifi sytems. This is mainly due to the sheer power of the system and the fact that its not a mesh so there is very little drop in throughput for the satellite node. I needed strongest signal possible in my office which is some 70ft or so from the router (a tired virgin super hub 3. 0 which used to kick out a good signal). The orbi system covers this easily and i am consistently getting 180mbps downloads. This is with the router and satellite 40ft, and 4 walls away from each other. Out goes all my other wifi kit and powerline adaptors.

Exceptional product well worth extra cost. Excellent wifi range recommend to replace any hub provided by suppliers like virgin or sky for improved speed and stronger signal.
