Philips Fidelio M2L Headphones : great headphones but with a but

Amazing sound quality, blow my mind.

Purchased as a test and definitely approved. I purchased them to test the potential of the digital connection compared to the sound quality provided by traditional, stereo jack based, headphones like my b&w p3. I must say that the difference is easy to spot when you listen to your favourite songs, especially when you start exploring the world of hi-res audio files available on dedicated services. The sound has a clarity and an openness that is difficult to get with other headphones.

Great headphones but with a but. I bought these at an airport when i’d left my regular bose at home. So, given that they were a slight impulse purchase, i will admit that i’m surprised at how good they sound. In fact in some ways i prefer the sound to my qc3s. But they do have 2/3 almost fatal flaws1. There is no way to answer a call using them, as they lack a microphone. . Which is sometimes annoying, but less so on a flight2. They can only be used with iphones/ipads via a lightening connector, which for me is not a problem, but still it does restrict them3. I guess because of their integrated electronics which are powered via the iphone, they do tend to reduce the iphone charge a small bit quicker, which is annoying as you cant charge the iphone and use them at the same time (also i guess would be an issue with most battery cases which i think operate via mini usb)but all that said, if you are into the apple world, these are great sounding headphones as good as if not better than my sony mdr-1rs and bose. Noise isolation seems good, well no-ones complainedwear-ability wise, i didnt have an issue, but i have a large dara Ó briain tyoe of head, so found that after a couple of hours wearing them, that my ears felt theyd been in a rugby scrum.

Good first effort with a lightning jack but not perfect. The only apple device i’d buy these to pair with as of 1st september 2016 is an iphone se. There’s a fundamental problem facing these m2l’s and it’s the dac / headphone amp circuit combination in most apple devices. That which lives in the iphone 5s, 6 or 6s – or in an ipad – is really rather high quality and powerful enough to drive a broad range of sub-£200 headphones well, which means it isn’t all that easy to better it. Those of you who know what a flac file is will know that iphones can’t output audio at better than cd quality through their headphone ports. That said, cd quality from a phone is good enough for me and iphones are consistently at or very near the top of their class for mp3 to cd grade audio playback. All an iphone normally needs is a pair of headphones that can do the normal headphone output justice. Almost any sennheiser momentums, for example.

Hi-res listening for iphone. . Great headphones to use in conjunction with your iphone/ipad with lightning connector. These headphones will not work with anything else as there is no jack adaptor available. Due to the built in dac, the sound is one of the best i’ve managed to achieve from a portable device – something i’ve spent a fair bit of time and money on over the years. They sound good when listening to itunes downloads at 256kbs but these cans really come into their own when listening to lossless rips or hi-res music. The sound is very natural and suit all types of music. I’m using the onkyo hf player app to listen to the higher quality music which i can also recommend. You can control volume and track changes etc from buttons on the side of the headphones which are easily accessible and intuitive to use. You can take phone calls but you have to speak into the phone as there is no microphone due to only a digital signal being transmitted up the cable. They are quite tight fitting but this does lead to good passive noise reduction.

Absolutely stunning headphones. Had the earlier fidelios with a regular connector, which got a what hifi 5 star review, then saw an online review of these saying because they took a digital feed from the iphone and used their onboard dac the sound was even better. More detail, and wider stereo soundstage. Stunning headphones for the price.

Fabulous sound – only works with lightning connector devices. I use mine with an iphone 7 plus. The inbuilt dac in the headphones makes a massive difference. Only negative is the cable isn’t very flexible. Philips fidelio audio products are very premium – in quality but not price. Try a pair first – i am sure you won’t be disappointed.
