PRO-JECT Project Debut Carbon Turntable With Ortofon 2M Cartridge : Fantastic! But it could be better

Having researched all the mid- and upper-budget turntables, i finally decided on this one. So far i’ve been very happy with this product, which i bought to replace a hopeless all-in-one system (trevi – rubbish). The pro-ject debut carbon is well engineered and has a sleek yet sturdy, understated design quality – looks and sounds amazing in the white version with black turntable. I bought a pro-ject preamp to go with it and connected to my existing speakers. As a complete technophobe even i managed the set up by following the instructions (helped by watching an australian chap demo the set up on youtube). I’m delighted to be able to play my old and new lps. The only drawback is that you have to reconfigure the set-up to play singles, fortunately i don’t have any, but i imagine this would be a slight inconvenience otherwise.

Fantasticbut it could be better. Pros: a very good quality entry / enthusiastic level turntable. . With the right equipment (speakers, preamp, amplifier). No button to change the speeds.Changing from 33 1/3rpm to 45rpm is a pain cause it requires you to take the platter off and change the belt position.

I purchased this turntable for my husband for christmas. The product looks classy but it is the sound quality that makes it stand alone. Having spent a great deal of money over the years on sound systems he thought he had the best you can get but the project turntable has surpassed every other system he has owned.

Cartridge is too bright and sibilant, but overall good vfm. I fitted a goldring 2300 for a much better, smoother sound.

Project debut carbon turntable. This was delivered quicker than my estimated date. Looks as good as online pictures. Had read many reviews before purchasing and definately made the right choice.

These days i mostly listen to digital files via various devices. This sounds better than them all, no question. A friend of mine asked me to look after his vinyl, so i got this to listen to it and it’s amazing, so warm, so clean, very very happy with it.

This is a very good turntable and it’s performance far exceeds the price. The red finish looks quite striking and makes a change from the usual offerings. Project are to be congratulated for this and their carbon arm included for the price. Usually only found on turntables costing much more. I do have a turntable costing around four times that of the project plus an arm and cartridge of a similar price. The project deck is not far behind. I would have preferred an option without the fitted ortofon cartridge to enable a purchaser to make their own choice. Plus supplying the 50g counterweight in place of the fitted cartridge as well as the supplied 55g weight. In my opinion the deck is let down by the fitted cartridge. I have replaced it with an old, 1980’s, sae1000e high output moving coil cart. Costing only a bit more than the ortofon 2m red retail) which takes the deck to a higher level completely. The ortofon is poor in comparison with overblown, out of control bass and ‘splashy’ treble, particularly cymbals. This is probably a subjective thing and no doubt many will be more than satisfied as purchased. Assembly and set up was very easy and straightforward.

Brilliant turntable but beware faulty inter-connectors. This is the 2nd project carbon turntable i own and its brilliant but there were some problems with this purchase. At first there was a loud hiss out of one speaker. Fortunately i was able to identify that it was the inter-connector that was the problem because the turntable worked fine with my old inter-connector. The seller sent me a new inter-connector but for this one sound only came out of one speaker. At this point the seller consulted his supplier who asked for the whole package to be returned (i can’t think why the supplier decided on this since it defies logic). I wasn’t going to do this, well not at my expense, so i telephoned the seller who agreed to send another inter-connector. This arrived the following day and now everything is working well. The turntable is great but it does cast doubt about the reliability of inter-connectors. I was fortunate because i was able to test the turntable with cables that i knew worked.

Very sturdy, convincing device. I read loads of reviews on many turntables before choosing this one – i live a long way from anywhere so an audition was out of the question. The device arrived promptly on the promised day. The cartridge turntable was easy to set up, with a nice feel to the mechanical parts – very smooth action when turning the weight to the correct position. The table is heavy and the white finish i chose is stunning. Only downside for me is the felt mat which is pathetically flimsy and light, it often attaches itself to the vinyl when removing the record from the deck which is a big faff. Nevermind – i suppose perfection is rare. The deck is silent in operation and simple to use. Compared to my old nad deck (25 or so years old) there is an improvement in everything. No discern able rumble, the sound appears to be coming from a wider angle.
