SiliconDust HDHomeRun CONNECT 2-Tuner DVB-T : Works okay, but needs a STRONG signal

Bought for use with plex dvr. I can finally ditch sky+, with this and netflix, and amazon video, and nowtv.

Another plex user, works with live tv and the dvr feature just as the prophecies foretold. This little inconspicuous box just sits in my server cabinet minding it’s own business doing its job. There’s really not much to review because it just does exactly what it’s supposed to. Highlights- it has it’s own web page with status information, current and past- two tuners, both capable of 1080p streams at the same time- it’s probably smaller than you expected and that the box would suggest- regular, single aerial input, push type not the twist on coax type.

Neat device but expensive for what it is. Got this to work with nvidia shield pro and the plex media server app running on the shield. Neat little device but find it expensive with only 2 simultaneous channels compared to say the virgin media box which has 7 channels. Fast change over of channels although i found on some channels it needed to settle down where it was at first jittery or missing sound. I have a good signal and the connect is connected to my shield via a fast router using standard cat6 ethernet cable rather than wifi. The epg that comes as a live and dvr subscription with plex, not hdhomerun’s own epg, is not the typical grid based epg with a list of channels on one vertical axis and time (up to 7 days) on the horizontal axis. No instead it shows categories or programs which i find slow to navigate. The defacto epg is a key missing feature for me. It is not a fault with hdhomerun itself of course, but in the combination of products, i’m using pretty useless. Recorded material originating from connect played back well.

Works great, but lacking a little bit of customisation. I use this with emby media server, which is similar to the plex media server other reviewers have discussed. The first thing to mention is that, wow is this thing small. Its not too much bigger than a raspberry pi in the typical case you would buy. Very easy to tuck this away close to the socket. It doesn’t make any noise and i havent noticed any extreme heat given off from it. It works really well, connected quickly and without any real fuss. It does exactly what it says it should and has given me access to tv anywhere in the house that has wifi, ethernet or homeplug. If you also set your mediaserver up correctly, you can access the tv streaming remotely from anywhere in the world with a decent internet connection. I dropped a star because i would have liked a bit more configuration and customization of the internal settings to allow me to name and control the channels that it actually makes available for 3rd party software.

SiliconDust HDHomeRun CONNECT 2-Tuner DVB-T, DVB-T2 DLNA Compatible Streaming Media Player, HDHR4-2DT- UK Version : Use this on my home network to deliver up hdtv to my plex solution, love it.

It’s impressive, it really works as a dvr/ vcr combined with nvidia shield pro too. This lets two users on a wifi network watch tv on a tv, tablet, pc, mobile phone etc at the same time. You can also subscribe to the recording service from hd home run. Providing you have a very good wifi ac router (never a isp branded one) and an aerial in perfect working condition this thing is brilliant. Any faults on your ariel or if you have a poor router expect glitches and out of sink audio. I had both these issues and shelled out to make my areil work and bought an asus modem/ router and all the issues are now gone. I use this device with an nvidia shield pro, subscribe to hd home run recording service so record directly to the shield. Hd home run app for recordings is excellent perfect and has series link. I use google’s live channels app to watch tv as i prefer it’s tv guide and use a harmony touch remote to switch channels. I hit a bbc one icon for example it turns over. The only way to make the harmony remote work with touch tv channels was to tell the harmony software the tv rather than the shield was controlling channels and use panasonic viera link. Silicon dust’s dvr works way better than plex dvr beta. Recordings on shield pro in hd play smoothly and you can control the dvr on the actual app.

Work with my plex server it work really well easy to setup. I brought the hd home run to work with my plex server it work really well easy to setup.

Works great – we need better windows 10 ,software but if you have a plex pass you can now use the dvt functions which is what i bought it for :).

Compatible with emby and plex – works great, connect to network and aerial feed and away you go.

Superb hardware, easy to set up. Needs 3rd party software to make most of it. .Using with eye tv 3 from elgato on the mac as a dvr (until hdhomerun dvr released) and the channels app on the apple tv 4th gen giving me live tv on the apple tv. Flawless full hd streaming of channels in the uk. Only caution is you really need the 3rd party software and apps that function with this to make the most of it. Supplied software literally functions but is crap and not suitable to day-to-day use. Otherwise would have been 5 stars.

A powerful kit when paired with the right software. . I have been a traditional windows media center user with internal dvb-s / t cards and been pleased. However, with the release of windows 10 and the end of wmc as we know it, i wanted to explore other avenues. I am a heavy user of emby media server and have been building my home network around a whs2011 box running it. Being able move rooms and it remember where you had got to, grab meta-data and lock collections down is great. Recently the devs of emby have added live tv to their bow and so i took the plunge with this. Setup was dead easy, gave it a static ip on my network, scanned for channels (be aware that a recent beta fw has given me more channels than before), and added my schedulesdirect details for epg. Works a treat and provides tv anywhere i can get a data signal (in home, away from home, abroad etc). Emby and this a fantasitc combo for those with a home network and multiple users.

Easy way to get tv to computer upstairs. Easy way to get tv to computer upstairs and integrates with plex very well for dvr (plex pass required).

After trying just about every other option (e. , crawling around my attic for an hour with a wire tracer to try to bring a new live aerial wire down or using a wireless hdmi av transmitter to spoof one tv signal onto another tv) i came across this product. I’m happy to say that it 100% works as advertised – when combined with an amazon firestick, it allows for a great hd full tv experience. I highly recommend this product.

      1. Cure for stuttering or poor picture. I am posting this because i battled for ages trying to get this to work. Even though the signal was good and my tv displayed a perfect picture a booster needed to be added – hdhomerun just needs a really strong signal even if your existing tv and picture are fine when connected directly to the aerial. I think silicon dust should state this on the instructions and also their support, whilst responsive, was poor in giving this simple advice. You really wouldn’t think to add a booster if the signal is fine throughout the house, but trust me, it works. Other than that quite major frustration, setup and use is great and i’m getting live tv to my apple tv with recording via channels app.

Ditch virgin media, sky etc, create your own tivo and save money. Fantastic little device, just need a decent tv aerial and connect it to your local network by plugging it into your router. I initially purchased this to use with an nvidia shield tv pro and the new plex live tv & dvr feature, unfortunately the nvidia shiled and plex combo turned out to be too unreliable and i had to return the shield as i just couldn’t watch or record live tv without constant glitches and freezing of the picture. I now use an apple tv and the excellent channels app ( £25 + $8 monthly subscription for the channel guide ), which aslo requires the dvr software to be installed somewhere on the same network, and as i already have a mac mini 24×7 backing up files etc i installed the channels dvr software onto it. If you don’t already have a suitable computer or nas that can run the dvr software then the best option would be an intel nuc pc with linux installed and a decent sized hdd for the tv recordings, just make sure you get an nuc that supports hardware transcoding, see the channels community for more info. Once you have your hdhomerun connect attached to both the aerial and your network and the channels dvr installed and running then install the channels app on your apple tv and you’ll be watching and recording freeview onto your dvr via your apple tv in a matter of minutes. Ok, so if you don’t aready own the hdhomerun connect, apple tv and a suitable computer to run the dvr then the initial cost is quite high ( around £500 ) but then you only require the $8 per month channels subscription and home broadband ( vodafone are currently offering 76mbps unlimited fibre for £24 per month. So using my example of £24 per month for broadband, and approx £5 per month for the channels app subscription, you can pay as littlle as £29 per month, which means if like me you were on a basic tv and broadband package from virgin with standard channels and 70mb broadband paying £46 per month then it will take around 30 months to pay for itself, and after that you’ll be saving £17 per month. I was with virginmedia for 5 years, so if i could have made this switch 5 years ago i would have saved over £500.

    1. Best of breed at the moment. Plugging it into the router makes tv available to all our devices, just need to install the hdhr app on them. At first there were a few channels missing (weak signal) but when i read that each passive coaxial splitter loses 25% each split (and 4-output versions are effectively 2 splits that then split again, so 25% loss first split, another 25% of the remainder on the 2nd split). I invested in a £13 signal booster and all the channels are not very strong. This was needed because i was feeding the signal into the tv directly since has a freeview box and into an nvidia shield tv box as well. Great cable-cutter choice and they even have a dvr option for $35 (yes, usd) per year (needs somewhere to store the recordings) – i believe that with the right storage choices this can also make the recordings available across the network as opposed to just from the place they’re stored. Usb tuners have limitations that this network-connected device does not. The dvr option also gives you epg for the year and that’s often one of the issues with going it alone – getting a decent epg with up to date content looking ahead in time and offering pause, rewind tv etc.

I have bought one of these with an indoor aerial to use with plex, the tuner works great with both plex and the hdhomerun ipad app. Once plex allow multiple users in the home to tune in to live tv (at the moment only the admin account on the server can use plex dvr) i will be getting some more to add more tuners.

    1. All now works flawlessly and i have a perfect plex setup hosted on a dell venue 7130 i5. Purchased this to use with plex dvr. Ts file it produces makes plex’s skip forward and skip back a little clunky. I then installed mcebuddy which not only converts the file to a much smaller. Mp4 format but also strips the adverts out (with limited success). All now works flawlessly and i have a perfect plex setup hosted on a dell venue 7130 i5 tablet.

So simple you don’t need a youngster to set it up. . The hdhomerun is much more stable than some web reviews report and a step up from the usb stick tuners i previously used. It’s unusually easy to install on a network and the software downloadable from silicon dust’s website allowed me to setup the tuners for nextpvr in 30 seconds. This was a worthwhile purchase. ***** update *****i purchased a second homerun last week because the first is just so good (none of the problems suffered with usb stick style tuners i used previously). The flexibility of these devices is a dream come true. You can assign any pc and any storage device to the tuners as long as they are on the same network. Live streaming is great but the image is not as sharp as i expected. It’s not a big deal though and i suspect most viewers would be perfectly happy. I will look at upgrading the wall wort power supplies as see if that helps.
