Sony HT-CT390 300 W Sound Bar – Underwhelming but mostly functional

Lip sync issues only effects blutooth. I was gonna pass on buying this as several reviews mentioned lag/lip sync issues. When using wired connections (hdmi and optical) it’s perfectly fine. There are lag issues when using the bluetooth connection though. Audio wise it’s not too shabby. Bass is decent but no where near over powering.

Sony ht-ct390 sound bar + subwoofer. Being new to sound systems in general i wasn’t sure what to expect. We’ve always just turned up the telly in the pastthis kit from sony was easy enough to setup out of the (strangly shaped) box. The long soundbar is low profile and doesn’t look out of place sitting on the bottom shelf of under the tv, blueray and sky boxes and the subwoofer to the left of the tv. Once it was plugged in and working you can really tell the difference from the tv speakers. The sound quality is great to my ears. There is a depth of bass from the subwoofsound and the sound does fill our lounge. We have quickly adjusted to having it switched on permanently whenever the tv is on. You will need an hdmi cable (not included) to get setup and running for the first time.

Nice quality -and with night mode can lift dialogue further. For the price £180 (amazon deal). No lip sync issues (arc return used) – see my thoughts on this below. I bought it for my tv in the kitchen. Being a large noisy family room, the standard tv speakers were not up to it. Nice quality -and with night mode can lift dialogue further. Sub has nice balanced sound as well (don’t know what other posters are talking about orange light. Mine is green as per instructions). **please note earlier firmware on sony 4k android tvs did show lip sync issues on my other sound bar for the living room and on 7. Once you set up the wireless sub woofer correctly you wont believe your ears glad i bought this no regrets.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Not bad, was expecting worse as it’s all plastic and wood gives a better sound, so I was surprised
  • I would recommend for anyone looking to upgrade poor TV speakers
  • Bit dissapointed

Simple set up, excellent sound quality but disappointed with volume. It’s louder than the tv but only just.

I wanted this sound bar for a while but waited until it went on sale, there wasnt many reviews online but with sony you expect quality and thats exactly what you get. The sub speaker really adds depth to what ever your watching and is easily hidden away.

Very good soundbar and sub woofer. Very good soundbar and sub woofer, albeit very large. We’ve been using a soundbar by a well known speaker brand with our samsung series 6 j6300 55-inch tv as i found the tvs inbuilt speakers quite harsh and it is currently about half the price of this sony soundbar, but was about two thirds of the price about 9 months ago. So the question for me is; is the sony twice as good?. But it is appreciably better in some ways. For a start, it’s much more powerful. This is good for us as we have a large living room and due to its shape we sit about 15 feet away from the tv and for me this is where the sony soundbar comes into its own, because i think the nearer you get to this speaker the worse the sound is. Up close the sound could be quite airy and thin and i have to say this is something i’ve noticed with a lot of modern speakers, the lack of a wooden cabinet seems to make them quite ‘tinny’ at low volumes. This at higher volumes it’s very good i think the size of this soundbar is an attempt to widen the soundstage as much as possible and i think it does work, from where i sit if i play music at a fairly high volume the soundstage is pretty impressive. Set up was very easy, virtually plug and play. I used the optical cable (provided) to connect to the tv and then waited whilst the soundbar connected wirelessly to the sub woofer and then connected both via bluetooth to my laptop and our kindle fires. I was able to listen to spotify within 10 minutes of opening the box. The sound quality is very good for a soundbar and the sub woofer does add some subtlety and range, although it’s obviously not as good as a dedicated hifi system, but then it’s not really meant to be. The sound from the tv is definitely superior to in inbuilt speakers, but this is where it’s not much of a step up from the cheaper soundbar.

Excellent soundbar, plays really with with our sony tv. We have sony’s kdl-50w805c 50-inch 3d 1080p tv, and i have to say we went on a bit of a journey with it – primarily because we had to send back two successive tvs back to amazon for dead pixels. But now we’re very happy with it, with one exception; the sound is relatively faint and weak. So i was really looking forward to seeing what this soundbar brought to it. First, setting it up literally could not be easier. I plugged it in, arranged it in front of the tv, and plugged it in to the hdmi port on the tv. Now i can imagine that this might be more of a chore with other tvs, but with ours the tv even recognized the soundbar, and switched the volume control on the tv remote to actually control the soundbar volume. The subwoofer connects automatically via bluetooth – again, great. Most importantly, on to the actual sound.

Great sound really happy with this product.

Great sound provided you set it up right. Great sound and depth from subwoofer. Lot of people claim the subwoofer isn’t load, and that’s because they did not set it up correctly. If the lights green it won’t be loud enough read instructions to connect volume of bar with subwoofer, if you’ve done it right the subwoofer light will be orange not green. Make sure subwoofer volume is at max level which is 12. Hope this helps anyone who may need it. Also make sure you connect an hdmi cable with ethernet for max performance, i found older hdmi cable cause voice delay etc and ensure hdmi is plugged into your arc hdmi of your tv, if you don’t have arc hdmi you’ll have to settle for optical cable.

Pound for pound, great sound. Okay, so i didn’t buy this through amazon, however. Firstly i connected via hdmi arc, this means when i switch my samsung tv on the soundbar switches on, also the tv remote turns the sound volume up and down, however the sub woofer still needs to be turned up or down using the supplied remote. Also if you want to change the sound effect, such as movies, sport, voice, then you still need the supplied remote. The sound via the tv is loud enough and watching breaking bad via netflix, we got all the background noises etc. You wont get the full 300w output via the tv though. However after linking via bluetooth to my mobile phone and playing “down in the tube station at midnight” by the jam and cranking up the volume, oh boy does it blow your ears off. We paid 199 euro for this as we live in ireland, so for this price very happy. The rrp was around 380 euro, well i wouldnt pay that for a sound bar, but 199 its a bargain. Ive always had sony stereo systems, apart from a bush.

      1. I would recommend for anyone looking to upgrade poor tv speakers. Build quality: as you would expect from sony and a soundbar that almost breaks that £200 barrier the build quality is perfect, there are no sharp edges or anything, it’s feels solid well built and happily take kids playing around it, if it’s in your loungesound quality: the sound quality is really good, not brilliant because it could do with a bit more bass (considering the size of the sub) but it won’t be shaking the floor and keeping next door up all nightconclusion: for the money i doubt you’d find something better than this, clear sound decent bass and superior sound quality, i’ve seen some competitively priced bose and samsung soundbars but considering these don’t come with a sub i’m almost certain that the sound on those will be flat, whereas the sony soundbar has very balanced clear sound with a thump.

For the price and the so called “300w” i expected a bit more. It has a clean sound, but on max it’s quite quiet and even the bass is very low. Bit dissapointed on the performance, but quality wise it’s an ok.

      1. Integrates well with sony tv controls but some sound/video sync issues. Some sound/video sync issues, irrespective of whether using hdmi cable or optical cable. Sound is fairly decent quality, the sub seems to be powerful enough. I don’t bother listening to music with it, i just wanted it for watching tv and went with this one as it is the same brand as my tv and so it switches on and off automatically with the tv and the volume is controlled by the tv remote. I’ve messed about with lots of settings and can’t seem to rectify the sound/video sync issue, but i’ve found that switching everything off and back on again improves the issue.

    1. Not bad, was expecting worse as it’s all plastic and wood gives a better sound, so i was surprised. Great sound for a plastic box, would be better in wood, but at half price one can’t complain too much. Works great with all my bluetooth gadgets and sounds really good when music is played, just a little light with the tv but still ok.
