Teac Tn300 Cherry – Great value record deck

Great turntable-fast del-well packed and good value for money-nice sound and top looking””””’.

I love this – its so cool, retro :).

But it looks like a technics clone. I’ve had this for a couple of weeks now – after several months of deliberation, looking at rega’s and pro-jects and audio technica turntables, i settled on the teac, as it met three primary requirements1) a 33/45 switch rather than manual belt change. We switch between singles and lps a lot and don’t fancy removing the platter to do so, especially for records where each side is a different speed. The phono stage on my existing amp was starting to have problems, and relatively few modern amps have phono support. This wasn’t a deal breaker – i would have lived with an external pre-amp, but having it built-in was one less box. (and yes, aware of arguments for having it external, but this is still ‘budget’ kit)3) appearance. Sonically, i expect the direct drive audio technica turntable with same cartridge will give a very similar sound. But it looks like a technics clone, and i didn’t want a ‘club’ turntable in the front room. (in fact, it was replacing one of our pair of dj decks). Here are the specifications for the Teac Tn300 Cherry:

  • Onboard Phono Stage
  • Belt Drive

A beautiful, simple, outstanding turntable.

  • A brilliant bit of kit

Fantastic record deck, very good value and the cherry colour is to die for. Connected to my denon amp the sound is superb.

Bring your vinyl back to life. Recently upgraded my old turntable after much deliberation settled on the teac tn300. Not only does this turntable look great but it sounds great too bringing new life to my old and new vinyl collection. Set up took less than 5 minutes and the ease of use being able to switch between 33 and 45 at the flick of a switch really makes this a very usable turntable. Highly recommended turntable at a very affordable price.

I have been around turntables all my life and i can honestly say that this is not a bad effort at a real good quality turntable. It looks stunning out of the box in the cherry finish and the unit was set up in minutes. I have not tried the usb function, but have some good aftermarket phono cables, the ones that come with it look cheap and nasty. The tone arm feels fairly well put together and comes people installed with the audio technica at95e cart. Fairly budget, but never less a good starting block. The platter is fairly tinny, but has a nice finish and the rubber mat is quite thick. The head she’ll is a bit weedy as well, but with the attached cartridge sounds ok. There is plenty of bottom end and the mid range is subtle with soft highs that are detailed, but not harsh. I have heard better from more vintage tables like the pioneer pl12iid that i also have with a shure m75 cartridge, although the shure lacks the bottom end grunt of the audio technica.

Looks classy and performs well, highly recommended.

****update****after having a second one of these for a couple of weeks, it started to do the same thing again, with the speed regularly inconsistent and sometimes absolutely all over the place. After contacting teac, they simply said to send it back for another one, but having had it happen with two already, i decided to go for something else and haven’t had a single issue since. Had this three weeks and was loving using it before the speed started fluctuating wildly. Contacted teac and they said to return to amazon which i have done. I will order a new one and update this review once i have had chance to determine if it was a one off or a problem with all units. The sound quality had been great, it looks great and had lots of comments from visitors so it is a shame it didn’t work correctly.

The best looking turntable out there. I’ve had this turntable for over a week now and i’m totally in love with it. I have it hooked up to a pair of audioengine powered speakers and it sounds fantastic. This is a fully manual turntable so you have to move the tone arm yourself onto the record, and when the record finishes you have to return the arm to its rest. It looks great and it feels quality, no plastic parts either. This makes a great entry level turntable, highly recommended.

The arm doesn’t return but the action on the needle gently going down is satisfying enough to make up for it. I’m in love with this turntable.

  1. Impressed with at first but does have a habit of jumping. I can play on my old kenwood without problems. Just not overly happy 18 months on.

Years ago i threw away a thoren’s deck because a) it was old, b) taking up too much room and c) could not buy records anymore. Having spent a few months looking at various turntables and recognising that i am at a stage of life when spending £1000 of a record player would just raise eyebrows of my family, and a possible kick up the bum from my wife. Decided on this pretty turntable. I cannot notice any problems- it feels great, sounds great. It was easy to set-up to my new teac amp (my old amp died after 25 years) using the built in mm phono equaliser. I am sure if i had another £300 to throw at it, i could have got something better, but would have wanted to go another £300 to reach the unreachable perfection. In short, this is a really nice turntable and does what i want it to do and looks great on the bookshelf.

    1. Brought as a christmas present for my brother. Great piece of kit for the price. Great sound and visually nice in the cherry red. Did have a minor rpm issue but the seller provided outstanding customer service and resolved the issue, quickly and without any issue by replacing the unit 6months after purchase. Hats off, it’s rare to find that kind of service.

  7. So i’ve held off reviewing the tn300 until after i’ve had it 4 weeks or so. This is simply a wonderful turntable. Build quality is amazing, much better than the pro-ject essential or rega rp1 in comparison in a shop i visited. The wooden plinth is something to behold and gives the turntable a really solid feel with great rubber feet adding stability. I thought the metal platter was a good weight for the price and a nice thick rubber mat sits on top. You almost cannot believe the build quality (beautiful), it’s sort of something you don’t expect any more. The operation of the turntable is a quiet as a mouse and the built in pre-amp is essential for me, and part of the reason why i chose it in the first place. Operation is faultless, forget ‘fully automatic’ this is a manual deck and just how a turntable should be in my humble opinion. The whole package makes playing and listening to your vinyl a complete pleasure.

Excellent sound quality, stylish classic looks. The only thing that would make it better would be if the arm returned.

Fairly basic in its features, it is a well functioning and very good sounding deck for its money. I gave it a couple of hours of playtime and couldn’t find any flaws. Also, i have found that you can adjust the speed if need be via speed pots underneath. I reckon if you upgrade to another cartridge you can get better sound quality but for its price it is very good. It is a bit more pricey than other entry level decks but i was happy to pay the up charge for it’s stunning looks.
