Uniden UBC355CLT Base Scanner Receiver : Very good value for money.

Not a lot to listen to these days, depends on location.

I had promised myself a scanner for about thirty years and finally took the plunge. It will scan and receive signals straight out of the box, but to get the best from it you will need some extras. I use it indoors and the supplied telescopic antenna will pick up local signals but a better antenna will give so much more. The internal speaker is functional but adding an external speaker or headphones improves the audio quality and the enjoyment. A good source of local frequencies improved things for me as i didn’t really know what to search for. I’m lucky in that i live near a harbour so i get quite a lot of maritime activity, and also airband from flying aircraft and the local airport which is about 20 miles away, although that can be a bit patchy depending on conditions. It will give me hundreds of hours amusement i suspect and i think i still have much to find. My only real disappointment with it is that it will not receive most military airband, but i did not realize that before purchase. I should have researched more.

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • 300 Channels
  • 25-960Mhz ( with gaps)
  • Close call facility

Its a good idea to get a better antenna. Also a radio with press button numbers would be better as scanning through frequencies takes ages. Good quality for money but would recommend another radio.

Difficult to program but excellent all-rounder. . Bought this as base station replacement for current uniden hand-held unit. I am only interested in the airband channels (swanwick atc) and found it rather difficult to program especially as the air/marine band is not programmable directly. I had to program these into the private bank which took quite a bit of trial and error to find out. The scanning speed is exceptionally fast which make things very hit and miss when initially locating which frequencies to program in (there is no direct frequency input mode), but a bit of patience paid off in the end. The internal speaker is not really very clear so i’m using the external speaker jack and didn’t bother with the supplied telescopic antenna as i have an external mast-mounted diamond d-777 dedicated airband antenna. Performance is on a par with the hand-held unit, but a permanently back-lit display and the way the unit sits makes it vastly better than trying to use the battery powered hand-held lying flat on the desk with a back light that times out after 5 seconds to conserve battery power. Overall a beautiful piece of kit that isn’t over-large but certainly produces excellent results. Just be prepared for some initial frustration regarding programming.

Very good with the right aerial. I have only just received this, so early days. Both the telescopic and window aerial are pretty useless, but with my mini-mag connected pulled in french atc controller from home in poole. With a proper antenna connected, this thing is pretty awesome across all the bands. I’ve only given it four stars because of the crappy supplied aerials.

Uniden UBC355CLT Base Scanner Receiver : The scanner arrived in good time and was much smaller than i had visualised. This was a pleasant surprise and is the same size as my icom pcr1000 so sits on top quite neatly. Sensitivity is very good, it is connected to an indoors discone antenna on the windowsill and i can receive all the local amateur radio repeaters, aircraft and marine band. It is very easy to operate and the pre programmed bands saved me a lot of work. The close call facility has also saved me a lot of searching time. All in all a good scanner and excellent value.

Excellent service from start to finish and p&p was quick too. The scanner is a neat little radio and does all the basic’s a scanner need’s to do. If you’re not familiar with scanners and how to program them i would recommend you upgrade to the next model up which has a key pad on the front so you can enter the frequency directly as this radio may be a little complicated for you to do if you’re not familiar how to install frequencies.

Excellent scanner for the money, just using the supplied window wire antenna at the moment and picks up well, easy to use, and covers the rx frequencies i wanted.

Great scanner for the price. I really like this scanner, it’s affordable and it’s easy to use. It also receives very well, i use it to listen to the local ham repeater which is quite strong, but it also receives the local air band way better than my other (ham) radios which have wide receive. I only have a few channels in it and usually don’t even have it on scan. One nice touch is the close call but i rarely use that as i have it on my nightstand, that’s more a feature you’d use when out and about. It has some drawbacks too: no direct frequency entry keypad, so entering frequencies is clumsy, you have to scroll through them (or let it scan for while till it gets close and then get the exact frequency with the up/down buttons) before you can store one. It also doesn’t have alpha tags so you can’t name your frequencies. Neither were really an issue for my use. One thing i do find a bit annoying is that it combines the volume dial with the on/off function. So you have to adjust the volume every time.

This is a high quality receiver, and seems to quite sensitive. The receiver has been designed to select channels and listen. Scanning and storing frequencies is not difficult to do either. If you want to do a lot of manual entering frequencies, however, you will find it frustating since there are no number keys. I use it for marine band listening and all the channels are set. Scanning them all takes less than a second, and you won’t missing anything. Noisy channels can be locked out, and it is easy to take the ‘hold’ off, and manually go up and down. Like anything worthwhile, you have to give time to it with the manual, and learn how to use it.

Good bit of kit that sits on top of a cupboard, and picks up all i need to. No problems with programming or reception, simple and easy to follow steps. Recommend if your after a relatively cheap scanner.

    1. Cheap, cheerful and very sensitive. Great cost/performance package. . Cheap and cheerful compared to some high end scanners. Programming is a real pain but as long as you don’t constantly want to change the scan memory channels it’s ok. I like the close call feature something my more expensive scanner doesn’t have. I have two of these now, one in the car and one at home. The small size lends itself to installation in a modern car. It beats a handheld in the car, 1) no batteries to run out and 2) an extenal aerial is better than the rubber duck on a handheld inside the car.

It looks like it was originally designed to fit under a car dashboard and has been fitted with a foot to allow it to sit on a surface. The telescopic chrome antenna that it is supplied with is pretty useless, and the long–wire one isn’t much better. I replaced the supplied ones with a better wide band aerial and had more success. If you want amusement and interest then this unit will deliver, but i wouldn’t want to be reliant on it for a business or in a safety critical situation.

Small receiver that packs a punch. I bought this because i live near a few airports and im on the coast, i spent time deciding on this particular model and found lots of good recommendations for it. I suggest you buy an antenna to increase range and signal strength. Uk/dp/b004myagay/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_14 for mine.

      1. Nice radio, wide band range. I live near a small airport and the coast, this radio picks up everything very clearly. I can also tune in to the local uhf repeater and listen to the amateur radio enthusiasts both mobile and static. I’m going to invest in an aerial for the loft to see how much more i can receive. The receiver covers a large part of the vhf/uhf radio spectrum, its a shame you cant tag each frequency but for £80 you cant really expect that.

Good little scanner once you’ve got to grips with the. Good little scanner once you’ve got to grips with the search and store programing system. Early days, but looking good.
